Authenticating to an external LDAP

Can anyone point me to some documentation that explains how to configure my Portal 7 installation to authenticate to an external LDAP, but continue to authorize against the local LDAP? For my scenario, I have Portal, Directory Server, App Server, Access Manager installed on Server A. I also have Server B, which contains Directory Server, App Server and Access Manager. I want to be able authenticate to the LDAP on Server B, yet utililize Server A's LDAP for Portal configuration and authorization. Is this a realistic scenario? Thanks for any help on this.

Information about authenticating to an external LDAP is in the following Access Manager manual: http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-2137/6n4er6d56?a=view

Note that when you configure authentication to an external LDAP (the one on server B), the AM on server B is not relevant. The AM on server A will directly access the directory server on B without involving AM on server B. This is assuming that you do not have the AM's on A and B tied together.

HTH.
