One of Java's selling points is that it is (in reality, mostly) compatible across different operating systems and computer architectures. Microsoft's platform supports multiple programming languages, but I think Sun supports only the Java language for the Java interpreter. Also, Microsoft's version of Java (J#) differs from Sun's somewhat.

J# is all-but unused these days.Yup, like most Microsoft products, buying into .NET means becoming a Microsoft shop. Not that there's anything wrong with that ...

Proper title: Why is .NET better than any other language? Answer: No reason.

Yes, it's rather like the commercials where those two guys (P.C. and Mac) have their friendly rivalry. Except I'm not quite sure I have a mental pciture of what "Jav" would look like.

That's exactly what I meant. And you gave a pretty good characterization of Java there, so I must have been right.

The main difference between Java (the technology) and .NET is portability. With Java, programs you develop become easily deployable on many different computer systems.

Other differences are minor, apart for one; Java is open source. This is a very recent change. Previously Java was owned by Sun. This can have a positive impact on the popularity of Java.
