IMAP SORT and THREAD extensions

Hi, I'm partially responsible for maintaining a JES messaging server. There's currently no support for the (RFC draft) SORT & THREAD extensions for server-side message sorting, which have been supported in several open-source IMAP servers (Cyrus, Courier) for some years now.

Does anyone know if there are plans to implement these in JES anytime in the near future?

Hi,

IMAP SORT (and IMAP COMPARATOR, IMAP ANNOTATEMORE, IMAP IDLE) is to be supported in the next release (2006Q4/Comm Suite 5/Messaging Server 6.3 - whatever you want to call it). This release should hopefully be available in the next two months.

IMAP THREAD won't be supported until *at least* the next release - maybe later. Nothing is certain until at this point.

Is there any particular reason why IMAP THREAD is an essential feature at this juncture, or is it a nice-to-have?

As with all features, I would recommend that you voice your request to your Sun Account Managers/via the usual Sun support channels. That way you can be added to any RFE's (request for enhancements) and the developers/product managers can prioritise as appropriate.

Regards,

Shane.

Yes, there's a real reason. We'd like very much to use a non-Sun webmail client (e.g., SquirrelMail, Horde IMP) with threading. Client-side threading is memory and CPU-prohibitive with all of the ones I've looked at.

I know that a number of customers are already using squirrmail and horde, without problems. Perhaps the threading imap extension isn't so important.

They're probably doing so either with threading turned off, or with comparatively small mailboxes. Many of our users have several thousand messages in their inboxes.

I know of at least two universities with large student populations that have been using such software for some time, now. They do not complain of performance issues. Have you tested, yourself?
