Patch 117418-01 problems
Hi, I have a Solaris 9 machine that is not allowing me to add
patch 114344-23 or 115553-24 -- both stating that they need
patch 117418-01.
When I smpatch add, I get the message:
One or more patch packages included... not installed...
It does not list any patches required with this patch. What am I missing?
(Thanks for the help - I'm a beginner at this stuff!).

Hi.Could you try the following command, instead of smpatch add:# smpatch update -i 114344-23 -i 115553-24That should take care of the dependencies.Mod.
# 2
Hi,
Well - it doesn't look like it works, either.I'm up for trying any other suggestions!
# smpatch update -i 114344-23 -i 115553-24

The URL is OK.Do you normally use an HTTP proxy to get out onto the Internet? If not, could you run:telnet updateserver.sun.com 443and see if it connects?Mod.

Hi,
We do not normally use a proxy server.
Telnet does connect -- so what am I missing?

Hi,
Have you tried installing these patches using smpatch add/update without the additional parameters?
# smpatch update -i 117418-01
failing that can you try manually adding the patch using patchadd?
# cd /tmp
# cp /var/sadm/spool/117418-01.jar /tmp
# unzip 117418-01.jar
# patchadd -M /tmp 117418-01
Please note that this patch will require a reboot afterwards.
In addition you can change the patch source for Solaris 9 systems to "https://getupdates1.sun.com/solaris/" using:
# smpatch set patchpro.patch.source=https://getupdates1.sun.com/solaris/
or for Solaris 10 systems you would use:
# smpatch set patchpro.patch.source=https://getupdates1.sun.com/
Please note the trailing slash in each case.

# 8
Well -- smpatch update by itself, fails, so I tried manually adding the patch.
(this feels like a gerbil wheel!):
# patchadd -M /tmp 117418-01
Checking installed patches...
One or more patch packages included in
117418-01 are not installed on this system.
Patchadd is terminating.
Can I just not get there from here?!!!!
Thanks again for the help,
Judy

Could you check if the packages the patch patches are installed on the system;$ pkginfo -l SUNWcarx.us$ pkginfo -l SUNWcarx.u$ pkginfo -l SUNWcsr
# 10
# pkginfo -l SUNWcarx.us
ERROR: information for "SUNWcarx.us" was not found
# pkginfo -l SUNWcarx.u
ERROR: information for "SUNWcarx.u" was not found
# pkginfo -l SUNWcsr
ERROR: information for "SUNWcsr" was not found
#
So, if these are part of the base of Solaris, - is the OS unstable/corrupt at this point? Is it best just to "start over"?
Thanks again for the help,
Judy
# 11
Hello jdigjudy,We are currently investigating this issue and will be in contact with you shortly.Regards,
# 12
The missing SUNWcarx.us and SUNWcarx.u package are for the Fujitsu platform so should not be an issue. The patch would only install the patch for these packages if the system was a Fujitsu platform.
However the SUNWcsr package is the "Core Solaris, (Root)" and you will have this package installed as it contains essential files for the system. I would perhaps then suspect its entry in package database is mssing or abnormal.
Can you check the /var/sadm/pkg/SUNWcsr directory exists and contains a pkginfo file?
# 13
Hi again (sorry, have been on travel).
Yes, /var/sadm/pkg/SUNWcsr does exist. It has two subdirectories:
install save
neither of these has a pkginfo file. The contents:
# ls install

I'm so new at this that I'm not sure what it means for the directory structure to exist as it does but - not be included in the pkginfo inventory...
Thanks again for any help!

Hi
Before delving into the more complex issue of the smpatch update/analyse cycle may we try to install the 117418-01 patch manually using patchadd.
If you download it from SunSolve then attempt the install and let us know what happens please.
Additionally, I had a look at the readme for this patch and in the special instructions it mentions :
NOTE:To get a complete fix for wheel mouse
support needed for Pro/E please install the following
patches:
115004-02 (or newer)kbtrans patch
115553-08 (or newer)USB drivers and framework patch
112785-36 (or newer)Xsun patch
Would you please check if these patches are installed using the following command :
# showrev -p | egrep "115004|115553|112785"
Thanks.

The problem is with the missing the pkginfo file from the /var/sadm/pkg/SUNWcsr directory. A pkginfo file is vital for the system to determine the installed packages and patches. Unfortunately It can not really be simply replaced with a original version as it would be updated with information on patches that have since patched the package.
If you do not have a backup from which the SUNWcsr pkginfo file can be retrieved, I would suggest raising a support case for assistance.
