Ultra 5 problems.

Was given 2 U5 boxen, and a monitor (ProView 564D). At power on, no output to the screen, keyboard seems inoperative.

I've checked these fora, and the on-line docs for solutions, but to no avail (so far).

Details:

At power on, there is a beep, keyboard LEDs flash.

On one machine (machine 1 for this thread), I suspect the HDD is dead as it can be heard searching, but does not seem to be spinning up. The other one's drive seems OK (machine 2).

There is no video output. I suspect that the output is set to go to ttya. I have tried <stop-N>. on the 2 machines, differing results but still no video.

Machine 1, lights flash on about 4 occasions, approx 15 second intervals. Then nothing. (I've temporarily given up on it).

Machine 2, after about 30 seconds I start getting beeps, in time with what would be the keyboard repeat rate, and with every key press.

Machine 2 also makes the right mechanical noises (HDD accesses, etc.) it sounds as though it is booting, but no video. (confirmation of sorts that it is booting is that <stop-a> immediately stops the noises, typing the 'boot'' command starts them again). So it would seem I do get the OBP prompt, just can't see it :(

So far I have tried with three different monitors (all 15" VGA jobs which were working last time used (about three months back)) and two keyboards (a Type 5 off a U2 and a Type 6).

Using the serial connection at this time is not an option (I have no suitable cable, and it will be a week or more before I can get one). Ethernet appears to be working (it has power according to the lights on my switch), but I have no idea what the IP would be (as I don't use DHCP - only 3 machines, not including those under VMware), so it will not be feasible to telnet to it over the network.

I don't know if it is relevant, but there is a large brown socket/connector in the middle of the system board. Should this have anything in it (it's empty on both boxes)?

Your time and assistance will be much appreciated, as I really want to get these machines running (at least one of them) so I can try my hand at testing (and maybe building) OpenOffice.org releases.

The large brown connector on the motherboard is meant for UPA graphics in an Ultra 10 case, not much use in the Ultra 5.

I think the only approach is via the serial connection so you can determine how far post is getting, current configuration etc. The U5 has onboard graphics through the HD15 connector, but that may have been disabled.

Cool. I was a bit worried, as I've seen a similar connector in a Power Mac, and there it held the boot ROM...

Will be organizing myself with a null modem cable and terminal software on my Linux machine in a few days.

Probably. My main concern is that the previous owner (a company) may have set the OBP security level at "full", in which case I'll have to find out how to reset things to standard. Unfortunately, I have no way of finding out what the password was, if it is a security problem.

Thanks for the info, I'll update things as soon as I can get to a serial console screen.

Hello, Once I had such a problem, I could not also get any display on monitor from ultra 5. I think the only way is to connect via serial port and see POST messages. In my problem I changed motherboard and the problem solved. You will the type of problem from serial port.
