Ultra 5 won't boot up

Hi everyone,

I have a ultra 5 that had a 270mhz cpu, it worked fine but was a bit slow.

so I upgraded the cpu to a 400mhz. I put it back together and turned the machine on and the hardware turns on, lights come on etc but nothing ever shows up on the monitor. the caps lock comes on and goes off and comes on again.

I put the 270back in and Same problem!

Any Ideas?

Thanks

Luc

the cpus in the U5 are very hard to install... check the pins for both cpus and see if any of them are bent.. re-install the 270 mhz making sure you only use the areas (depressions) on the cpu to push... also make sure that the clip at the front of the computer clips over the cpu (if it is there).

when you get the 270 back up and running, make sure the revision is up to date for the board... you will have to do research on this...

good luck,

ya I gave that a try, I changed a few cpu's in this type of machine.

I put the 270 back in and I only press on the 4 indented areas. and I take my time.

all the "pins" are nice and straight, no problems there (there not really pins per say)

any other ideas? before I just throw it all out in the garbage :)

if that ultra 2 was yours, I would stick with that... I have a very low opinion of the U5.... so, almost anything is better than it...good luck with it...haroldkarl

I got rid of the Ultra 2 way back.

dumbest think I ever did :(

the disk died in it and I was not using the box so I sold it.

then I wanted to get back into Sun and a friend of mine gave me the Ultra 5 because it had a dead time chip. turns out Solaris will run fine with a dead time chip.

so I am trying to get this thing to work.

now I think I somehow broke it when swapping the cpu's

hard to tell what went poof when you changed processors... you can buy a new nvram chip on ebay... are you in the USA? if the processor is the ONLY thing you touched in the exchange, then the nvram is a possibility...

it was running before you tried the 400mhz?

when in doubt, use a bigger hammer!!!!

yup it was running and I was in Gnome and shut it down properly before swapping the cpu,

now when I turn on the power switch it beeps and the drive spins up then it just sits there

the monitor never turns on.

I wonder if the NVram chip needs to do something to allow the cpu's to work after being swapped

who knows I might keep an eye out for a cheap NVRAM chip and give that world but don't really want to spend much money (the cpu was 14 bucks) on a old machine.
