non proprietary drives
Does anyone know of any cd or dvd drives that are readable in Sun Ultra60 which are not proprietary units?
Is it possible to send Sun a harddrive and let them install OS on it and leave the configuration to me? Or purchase flashed BIOS chip for SunBlade100?
What may cause memory to be not aknowledged by the system?(say I have 1.5 gig and it says 512 meg).I thought it was telling me an empty space at such and such address, but no it says 512 installed at,duh.
Where can I find a three button Sun mouse?Or one of those graphic dials?

Hello,
if the systems (Ultra 60, Blade 100) aren't under service contract, it's upto you to use non-Sun parts. Any SCSI CD-ROM with a block-size jumper works in the Ultra 60. The ones from Plextor, Teac or Toshiba with at least 32x speed are the most common ones.
The Blade 100 takes a plain ATAPI CD-ROM from a PC (there are probably slight variations in the implemented command set for DVD drives, some DVD drives don't work).

If you can afford to pay a multiple of what a used Ultra 60 is worth, maybe. Seriously I don't think so. Just try to install the system yourself, read the documentation from Sun (http://docs.sun.com/app/docs?l=en), if you get stuck don't hesitate to ask.

Probably you try to use the wrong memory modules or they aren't properly seated. To help more details (e.g. part-no) are required.

Sun offers a Type 7 USB keyboard and (wheel-)mouse which is surpringly inexpensive. For SPARC systems with non-USB keyboard/mouse there are no converters available to attach a wheel-mouse (the other buttons work, but not the wheel).

Thank you,I had thought so too,I spend hours on phone triing to talk to Sun reps (mostly on hold or I'll transfer you) cant even discuss a service plan with anyone , but they do have DVD drive for $350 and no guarantee that its compatible with BIOS or CPU module to be booted from or I can give them 2500 dollar deposite on a repair or tech servicing.
I found the memory scene escribed in release notes disclaimers, seems that certain Sparc modules cause 1)sysem hang at boot and 2)erronious memory size readings or availibilities.
The SunBlade I found a jumper out of place, the manuals say jump pin 1-8 for such and such ,and this one was jumped 1-7(hope it didnt burn anything out) it was purchased from repo company so I should 've expected something eskew.
I will try a Plexor or Toshiba, found someone in Florida that carries them.
Thanx again.Oh! it still aint installed, preoccupied elsewheres.
