DiskSuite/SVM Host Migration

Hi

I am working on a DR plan, and have been given the following scenario.

The server and all local disks have been destroyed.

All that remains is the SAN (offsite replica)

Assuming we can rebuild the host in identical hardware, and connect to the SAN, can we recover the volumes on the SAN.

(The contents of /etc/lvm/ can be recovered from backup)

For the purposes of discussion, assume that all state databases were on local disks, and there are no copies on SAN.

Also, assume the volumes were RAID 0, and included concatenated volumes. (Multiple LUNs appearing to be 1 disk)

1. Is there a way to recover the SAN volumes?

2. How would the scenario change if there were state databases on the SAN volumes?

Regards

Vernon

Hey Vern,

If I understand your conditions correctly. The old host is washed away with the meta devices. The SAN survived. I have not worked much with older disk suites, but with Solaris 10 they have created "metaimport".

Once a new system is stood-up and SVM installed with new meta devices you can attach the storage run a "metaimport -r" to report on the unconfigured disk sets. Then import the selected disk sets. A quick read on this sounds a lot like "vximport" that I am very familiar with.

Yep, correct. Host gone, SAN intact. I have played with metaimport. It looks good.Unfortuantely, I cannot convince anybody to move to Sol 10 just yet.We are stuck with Sol 8 for now. Thanks for you input.CheersVern
