SUN Recommended Reboot Frequency
We are running Solaris 8 on multiple V480 servers. There are several Network Monitoring applications loaded (HPOV, CISCO WORKS, SERVICEonDATA) in addition to Remedy, BrightStor etc, etc, etc.
I have a SYSADMIN background with HP- HPUX 11.x. I would regularly reboot every 30 days or so to clean up the nuances that pop up after running for weeks. This practice worked well.
Is there any SUN recommended frequency for rebooting?

You should virtually never need to reboot except to install patches.
Uptimes of a 1+ years are not uncommon. At least for machines on a private subnet or behind a restrictive firewall.
I wouldnt recommend leaving an internet accessible machine unpatched that long.
I'm surprised HP/UX is that bad.

During my first year at Sun, we got a lot of complaints about a bug in the counter which kept track of the uptime.
Basically this bug would cause the counter to wrap around, so after a few hundred days of uptime the counter would be back at 0. To solve this problem you had to apply a patch and reboot. Which wasn't popular.
.7/M.

Indeed ..."wasn't popular" because the customers were accustomed to NOT rebooting their systems.
In my own past incarnation with Sun, I frequently came across customers
that reported uptimes of two or more years.
Sun systems just keep going, like the Energizer Bunny
My response to the question?
Reboot the system whenever you do your quarterly periodic maintenance.
( you do have a proactive maintenance plan in force, I hope.)

Hi,We only reboot our systems when required. We never, absolutely never reboot a sun system without a very very good reason. Uptimes of over 800 days is quite normal around here... we only reboot when we install a patchcluster or the system crashes.Nico
