SO8 (Windows) Update 4 download
Been trying to download latest SO8 patch for weeks.
Unfortunately, I am on dialup, and lose connection/download after several hours.
Have tried using Sun Download Manager 1.3 (...."that makes downloading large software packages from the Sun Download Center fast, easy".....), but consistently get error message:
"Server sunsolve.sun.com reported response code 403 for file pdownload.pl"
"Server sunsolve.sun.com reported response message (Forbidden) for file pdownload.pl"
I am not behind a proxy.
"http://sunsolve.sun.com" has been added to to "Authenticated Hosts List", along with User/Password.
Can anyone pls advise? (Going crazy here)
Thanx in advance

Hi there, a couple of quick (may seem daft) questions...
Are you on ISDN or Analogue dial up?
What country are you in?
Are you able to successfully access your account on SunSolve?
Are you able to download other large files ok?
What entry URL are you using to get to the file?
Once I have these I will try from my end on my SunSolve account and see if I have the same issues.

Thanx for response Doozer.

ISDN
> What country are you in?
US
> Are you able to successfully access your account on
> SunSolve?
Yes (otherwise download area cannot be accessed)
> Are you able to download other large files ok?
Yes (use a download manager due to limitations/inherent problems w/ dialup.
> What entry URL are you using to get to the file?
http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/pdownload.pl?target=120187-07&method=h

My "regular" download mgr did not work. OK, I figured, it must be an authentication issue.
Download w/ Sun Download Mgr fails as well with the "forbidden" error.
P.S. I have previously DL'd earlier SO8 patches w/o prob.

Bob,
Open up a browser, clear the cache and history etc. (so there is no cack to mess this up..)
Then Log into sunsolve.sun.com
Once logged in then open up a new tab (Dont close the other window)
Then go to (the link you provided):
http://sunsolve.sun.com/private-cgi/pdownload.pl?target=120187-07&method=h
This should then prompt you to save a .zip file, it is 168 meg.
Try this just using something like Firefox with no DL manager.
I would also check the following as an aside...
1 - you are on ISDN, are you using bonded channels to give 128k?
2 - does your ISP have a 2 hour max session? (in the uk some ISPs cut you off after 90 minutes etc.
3 - You said about the dl failing with a forbidden error, can you get any other files from the sunsolve portal?
I have just been able to get to the file doing the above.
Cheers

Followed instructions. Still fails after several hours (Typ. 80 - 120Mb downloaded). Sometimes without losing internet connection.
(Have tried with different browsers)
you are on ISDN...
Analog, NOT ISDN (sorry, must have been tired).
does your ISP have a 2 hour max session ?
No timeouts.
can you get any other files from the sunsolve portal?
Yes. DL'd an arbitrary small patch using 'conventional' browser download.
Note: SDM 1.3 (Sun Download mgr) does NOT work (for me, anyway) with any patches?
It DOES work downloading from 'docs.sun.com' site.
Which begs the question: Can you (or anyone else) download patches with SDM?

Bob

Hey Bob,
Sorry for the delay in replying I have been on vacation. The only thing I can now think of is that you call into the Customer Solutions Center for the country you are in and ask them to send you a copy of the CD - I am not sure if this is chargeable though.
The only other thing I can think of is to go to an Internet Cafe and download and burn a copy their using their DSL connection. I know it is not ideal - Im just thinking of ways around the issue.
What country are you in BTW?

Hi Doozer
"go to an Internet Cafe and download and burn a copy their using their DSL conn"
I've considered having someone else download for me.
"What country are you in"
US
One question remains: Can YOU download patches using SDM (Sun DL Mgr)?
For me, SDM works for all downloads except Sun patches.(?)

Bob

Bob,
Thanks for the bump, your question dropped off my RSS feed list!
Yes, I can download patches successfully using the SDM, I am beginning to think this is something to do with your dial up, but I can not be more specific until you try and do the download on something like a DSL connection.
Sorry I can not be more helpful on this one :( If you need me just shout.
Cheers

"Yes, I can download patches successfully using the SDM"
Curious.
I've tried with SDM v1.3 & SDM v2.
On two different machines.
With two different ISPs (both dialup).
Consistently get 'failure' notice.
Oh well, off to find a colleague w/ DSL.
Thanx for your patience.
