Whereas your current RAM is far too low for good functionality,

I have installed Solaris 9(x86) to that sort of a system and it worked well.

You should upgrade that system to a minimum of 256MB for Sol9,

and keep in mind that more RAM is better than less RAM. (384MB ? 512MB ? more)

My current x86 system happens to have Solaris 10 on it.

... 440BX (slot-1) chipset, 384MB, and a 10GB drive.

It runs very well on its P-III at 800MHz.

Pick a Solaris and install it. Then wipe it out and do it yet again.

Learn by doing. Learn by observing. Learn by repetition.

I recommend 700MHz PIII, 512MB ram (If desktop), 384MB (If not using CDE/JDS). 550MHz worked for me for a while, but had a few hiccups. These days I just run Solaris on my Sun Ultra 80 (Quad 450MHz UltraSPARC-II, 4GB ram) For space, 6GB + Swap (1GB is generally fine) + room for storage.
