First, I think that your decision should really be based upon your needs.
Also, from what I understand, it is no simple matter to get KDE to run in Solaris. And not unlike printer management in Solaris, it perhaps even requires a bit of sorcery.
I have managed to get Solaris 10 (not opensolaris) installed on a Dell D800 laptop w/ wireless support, but it still feels a bit "utilitarian".
This is personal preference, but I use Fedora as a "Windows" replacement for personal / workstation use. It is very easy to configure and maintain, and has quite a bit of community support. Not to mention that software management is a snap with the yum and yumex utilities.
I don't need a powerful, super-secure OS on my home pc and work laptop. I want ease of use, compatibility, and cool graphics/toys-- So I use Fedora there.
I do, however need server-class power, speed, reliability, and support on my servers. And that's where Solaris comes in for me.

Hi
i appreciate you reply
My needs are always based on Security,Speed,Stability, and
the ability to run some Multimedia apps as well as java and flash.
Games i dont really care about.sin cei i can run them on my XBOX :)
So far i have not been able to get my printer running on FreeBSD.
as it is not even listed in the hardware support database.
when i did install Solaris a few times i thought it was nice
Even though i was not crazy about the CDE interface
i like having it anyway Since i like to Switc Desktops from time to tiime
and also the Administration Utilites are easier to use then from the Gnome
when i switced over to Gnome in Solaris 10
i thought it was nice but it gave me this weird feeling that i was using Windows as it felt ad looked smooth lke windows.its hard to explain
also since i was not advanced as any of you i did not have alot to work with
all i knew then was pkg_add
i keep all my notes especially those which i have obtained from here in this forum wiht the help of others.
Even if i decide not to use one OS and stay with another.ill always keep notes reguardless. So i can always read them later on and learn more.
and about their comparisons
One reason i stayed away from Solaris is i heard too many things about Security Vulnerabilites.i am sure they have been fixed by now.
Since i do like to run a web and file server i always take precautions.
i think its great we dont use the ports system here
have you tried FreeBSD.
its also a very very stable and secure system.
its only the ports upgrades that are frstrating at times lol.
thanks agin :)
