Erroneous dependencies

I have a SPARC system running SunOS 5.9 and Common Desktop, but NOT Motif Window Manager. There is a security patch, 112771, for the Motif run-time library, libXm.so. The Common Desktop uses this library, but we cannot install the patch because it calls out the entire Motif suite of applications as dependencies. We do not have any Motif file sets installed and we do not want to install them.

Does anyone know of a way to force patchadd to ignore the dependencies and just update the files?

I just wanted to contact Sun about this problem because I believe it is an error, but I can only get to the Forums. (We do not have a service contract and I don't think this is a service issue.) I thought it would be a courtesy to point it out to Sun's technical support staff. I thought maybe they would agree that this is not correct and change it, if they knew about it.

Since I am on the Forum, I would not mind getting any sort of helpful feedback. Otherwise we will be forced to ignore the security problem and run without the patch.

Thanks.

This is totally unsupported, but given the position you are in, one thing you can try is going into the 112771-XX directory and running pkgadd -d. SUNW<whatever the package is that holds libXm.so>Patches are essentially a collection of sparse packages and some extra framework for checking dependencies, etc.

It would be certainly advisable to back things up before trying it, and don't blame me if it dorks the system or steals your lunch money.
