Hardware type
Hi All,
I am new to solaris, i have a Sun Fire V280R when i logged into the system and type "uname - a" the output iam getting is
SunOS mysystem 5.8 Generic_108528-29 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Blade-1000
this displays the server as Sunblade-1000, why is that so? is it becoz of the patch level or something.
Please help me.
Thanks.

The Sunblade 1000 Workstation, the Sunblade 2000 Workstation,
The Sunfire 280R Server, and the Sun Netra 20 Server all use the same main systemboard.
The uname command is probing that board and returning
an identifier data value that is hard-coded into an EEPROM on it.
There is no way to customize the contents of that data register.
When used as a replacement repair part, the same board
can be used for any of the four computer models.
You can see the mainboard part number if you glance through the
"Full Components List" for each system, in the Sun System Handbook.

Thanks a lot for your quick reply. I totall agree with you.But I have one more doubt i have onre more V280r and in that it displays as Sun Fire V280R properly, so is that mean on the former system the mother board has been taken from a Sun blade 1000 system.
will that affect the performance in any way?
Is this perfectly normal under normal conditions.
Thanks .

... then you may have a very old OBP patch version on one system,
while having a newer OBP patch version on the other.
Newer OBP firmware allowed the ID to report in a more "pretty" fashion.
From the OK prompt, the "banner" command will tell you your OBP version.
If you are up in Solaris, use the following to get the same info...
# prtconf -V{uppercase 'V'}
