BREAKTHROUGH - Cisco VPN Client is the culprit to slower Studio Creator
Folks,
I have been using Creator for months now. It was really fast and then all the sudden it became slow. For example, "Run Main Project" used to take 3-5 seconds, and then it started to take 50-60 seconds. It was driving me nuts. I already had all the hot fixes and latest updates installed. I thought it was my anti virus or its real time protection that was slowing it down. I spent about 2-3 days reinstalling Creator, uninstalling anti virus, firewall, etc and nothing improved the performance. I already have 2 GB RAM, and dual core processor, so I knew it wasn't related to memory. But still I tried to increase memory allocated to Creator from 512 MB to 1024 MB. Even this did not improve anything. I tried to undeploy all projects and use a very simple project with only one page and a text filed (to make sure my project deployment is not causing the slow down at Run Main Project), but that didn't help either. I couldn't figure out why it was so slow at "Run Main Project" when the CPU utilization was below 10% and memory at around 25%. I even tried to defragment the hard drive, stop most services, stop existing programs even the virus protection, just to find out what was slowing it down. I knew it wasn't slow initially, so something has caused it to slow down and I wanted to know the culprit.
After one by one uninstalling almost all software on my laptop and testing Creato--only to find that it does not make any difference, even after reinstall of Creator-- finally I thought to uninstall Cisco VPN client (even though I run everything locally on my laptop and VPN client is not even connected 99% of the time). After the VPN client uninstall, I got the same performance that I used to. Its now blazing fast and takes about 3 secs to do "Run Main Project".
Creator Team: You may want to look into this. I was running Cisco VPN Client 4.2 on Windows XP Pro, 2GB RAM, Centrino DUO (dual core) on IBM Thinkpad T61P. Please note that Creator wasn't slow, but "Run Main Project" option was slow -- when it starts the bundled server and deploys the application. I guess the bundled server does not like the virtual Network adapter created by VPN client.
Cheers :)

I have Cisco VPN Client 4.0.5 and noticed that it has a "Stateful Firewall". Perhaps that has something to do with the problem because deployment uses network sockets to talk to the app server. According to Cisco docs, the Firewall can be on even when *not* connected as you described. On my VPN client I can turn it off, but maybe there is a way to configure it if you want to be safer.

I also have Cisco VPN Client 4.0.5, and have not seen a response time problem. Perhaps the Transport settings have an effect. In the VPN Client window right click your Connection Entry > choose Modify in the contextual menu > Choose the Transport tab, and adjust if needed. Checking "Allow Local LAN Access" or "Enable Transparent Tunneling" might help, or might not be allowed in your environment. It's something to investigate.

Sabir - Several Sun engineers have tried to reproduce the problem, but we've seen no differrence in deployment performance. Can you give us more details about your VPN configuration settings, so we can identify the root cause and best workaround?

I wonder if its the combination of ZoneLabs Integrity Agent and VPN client that does it. A lot of weird "side effects" of this combination have been reported. I will try to reproduce it on my end. Thanks.Message was edited by: Sabir

I also have VPN 4.0.5, but I AM experiencing slow performance and it is driving me crazy. I also de-installed almost all of my applications. Including my virus software, all java instances and Studio Creator. When I look at my process in the task manager I notice that Studio Creator is taking 99% of the process. It never use to do this.
Any tips on how to fix this would be helpful.

RonL - We need a reproducable test case. As I mentioned in my Nov 19, 2006 post, several Sun engineers looked at this, but saw no problem. What are you doing in Creator when the problem occurs, what other software that affects your network connection is running, what are your VPN settings, do you see the same problem when not connected to the Internet or to your LAN, have you tried NetBeans Visual Web Pack 5.5 and seen the same problem?
If you can tell us how to create a reproducable test case, then we have a good chance at finding a solution or workaround. We can communicate offline if that would work better for you.

Vspurlin,The problem happens requardless if I am logged in using VPN or not, so my problem might not be related to the VPN itself. It might be better if we take this offline.

To make contact offline, submit a bug report and reply to this forum thread with the bug #. Go to http://developers.sun.com/prodtech/javatools/jscreator/support/index.jsp, click the "Bug Report / Feature Request" link, and complete the form that pops up. Include answers to the questions in my Dec 21, 2006 post. I'll get a forum watch email reminding me to respond to the bug, and I'll contact you offline.
Sun U.S. is taking off from today through Jan. 1, but I'll check my email occassionally. Just be prepared for slow response for the next week, especially if we need help from Creator product engineers.

IIRC, the Cisco VPN client has a built-in firewall which may be active even if you are not using it.
