tcp_smtp_server problem

Hi forum,

Our messaging server version is iPlanet Messaging server 5.2 hotfix 1.25. We had used this version for about three year, it's very steady. But recently, the MTA of our server is something wrong. Some tcp_smtp_server processes consume so much memory and swap,

Example:

PID USERNAME SIZERSS STATE PRI NICETIME CPU PROCESS/NLWP

15217 mailsrv 2655M 1925M sleep5900:00.06 3.3% tcp_smtp_server/64

21993 mailsrv 3877M 2703M sleep5900:00.02 2.8% tcp_smtp_server/65

Is it a bug cause to memory leak, or some one attacked our system?

Regards,

Peter

Well, 5.2hf1.25 is awfully old. . .

Even if there is a memory leak in tcp_smtp_server, the process should not "live" long enough for it to be a major problem. You might want to use ps, to see when these processes were started. If they're older than the last time you restarted, they should be killed.

However, there have been MANY issues solved with 5.2p2, which is available free on the Sun download site.

You should also be looking at upgrading to 6.2, at the very least.

Hi Jay_plesset,Thank you very much for your help. We plan to apply 5.2p2 first . Someone suggests me use 5.2 hotfix 2.14. OS version of our servers is solaris 8. What about your opinion? Is hotfix 2.14 stable version?Best regards,Peter

Hi,

If you have a support contract, then you can contact Sun through your usual support channel to get a copy of iMS5.2hf2.14 (although the latest is now hotfix 2.15). iMS5.2 patch 2 is the latest publicly available release (no support contract needed to download).

Regards,

Shane.

Hi,I recommend that you log a Sun support call so that your case can be investigated properly. If you are running the latest version of messaging server and still hitting this problem then chances are it is a new bug that needs to be addressed.Regards,Shane.
