Installation questions - SJES 2005Q4 Single Host
In the SJES Example documented at: http://docs.sun.com/source/819-4879/index.html the document says to simply "Download the Java ES from the Sun Download Center. So I find this comprises two files:
java_es_05Q4-ga1-solaris-sparc-1-iso.zip
java_es_05Q4-ga1-solaris-sparc-2-iso.zip
These are iso files designed to create a CD. I'd rather just download a compressed tar bundle since the machine I'm installing this on is in another building with limited access. I tried downloading the Communications Suite and other components to get the required JES components but had other troubles which I'll bring to this forrum if I run into them again.
So my quest is whether this is the only source of JES for the Example or whether there are other sources which are not in iso format.
Thanks...

Yes. Two ISO files. What I do, is to create CD's. Then, I copy the CD's to my target system, and install from there.

Hi,Through the magic that is loopback, you are actually able to 'mount' the ISO image on disk and install from that. No need to burn CD's etc.Instructions here: http://www.tech-recipes.com/solaris_system_administration_tips218.htmlRegards,Shane.

That's just what I needed. I downloaded the two ISO files that make up the Java Enterprise System download, unzipped them, concatenated them into one ISO file, then mounted it as the link you provided describes. Viola! No CD hardware needed. Sweet.
Thanks for the response and the excellent link.

Errr, just one small problem. After concatenating the two iso files into one I mounted the iso file and ran the installer. It ran fine and began the installation, then got to 10% complete and asked me to put in the 2nd CD! I hit continue but it wanted the second CD inserted!
So, I canceled out and restarted the installer. It noted that some of the components had been installed, so I went through the configuration but it stopped me when it couldn't find one of those installed components running. What a pain. Now I'll have to work around this feature.
Mounting ISOs is a nice trick but the installation software is unforgiving. You would think that if Sun were trying to sell this software they would make the installation of the Example simple.

Installation is simple, if you burn cd's. It's simple if you put all the files in the same tree.Concetanating the two iso's isn't somethint that they thought of.The next version will be released on DVD, and a single file for everything. Better? Due out in a couple

Yup, looks like I need to burn CDs to install this Example... Even after starting the Directory Server to get around the installer complaining that it was not running, it still asked for the SPARC_2 CD. Since the installer wants CDs I guess I'll have to make them.
The single DVD is ok, but if Sun is going to allow downloading to try out its software it would be nice if the downloaded software didn't have to be written to a CD and then read from the CD. Seems like a step that could be avoided.

I think what Shane was suggesting, when he suggested you mount the two ISO files was that you mount them one at a time, and copy the files from there to a local disk.I think your problem was in that you tried to combine the two iso files, and mount the result.
# 8
Hi,
Correct.
You need to mount each ISO image once after the other (not munge them into a single file). You swap over the images when requested to by the installer. During remote installs (i.e. where you can't physically insert a CD), this becomes your best option by far.
Regards,
Shane.

Yup, that works. To clarify for the record, you mount the SPARC_1 iso file, run the installer, then when the dialog box asks for the SPARC_2 CD, unmount the SPARC_1 iso file and mount the SPARC_2 iso file, then select "Continue" in the dialog box.
There were other problems though. Some installations failed. I reran the installer and added each component one at a time. The only thing that did not install was calendar. The error was that it could not access the CD. But I think I have enough to move on since I'm only interested in getting the mail server runnning.
I'm in the configuration process and have a question. The document uses the following example:
Hostname=wireless.map.beta.com
Domain=map.beta.com
Now I'd like to have email addresses like "joe@wireless.map.beta.com"
but the configuration seems to be assuming the email addresses of users will be "joe@map.beta.com". I guess that was somehow set during the "configuration now" entries. Is there a way to reconfigure this so that the email will go to "joe@wireless.map.beta.com"?
Thanks...

Figured it out. I ran /opt/SUNWmsgsr/sbin/configure and set the "Default Email Domain" to wireless.map.beta.com.
I now have the mail server up and am able to send/receive email as "Store.Administrator". Next step, create a few users.
The main reason I'm setting up this test mail system is to determine the limits of sending attachments. Our work involves a lot of large medical images and some can be as large as 10GB and against my advice management wants our email system to support attachments of that size. My reading has given me the impression that there is no limit except of course OS and hardware limitations. But I've also seen in the forums where people are having trouble when large attachments get to be 2GB or larger. Anyone know where this stands? Are the file size attachment sizes essentially unlimited?

Some mail clients may indeed have issues over 2 gigs.
You must have filesystems that support large files, as all messages (including attachments) are stored as mime encoded text, so binary files grow. I routinely send and receive files that are quite large, though not 10 gigs. The server really doesn't care, though none of the protocols that mail servers really use are optimized for such large filesizes.
Compared to any mail system that uses the old standard, /var/mail format, we should be far better, keeping each message in a single file.
By default, the MTA has no file size limit, though webmail defaults to a 10 meg max. You can change that.

Thanks for the info on mail limits. That is very helpful.
OK, I'm so close but so far. I have what I believe is everything running. I have a mail server and can login as admin and send/receive email, including attachments, as the admin (Store.Administrator) Remember I set the Email Domain to the equivalent of wireless.map.beta.com and not the default map.beta.com. This allows me to send receive email when logged in as admin as the user "Store.Administrator" and the email address used is:
Store.Administrator@wireless.map.beta.com.
I can also get into amconsole and I also have the DA server up and I can log into both. When I log into the DA it shows three organizations:
ABC
map.beta.com
DEF
I do not see wireless.map.beta.com as an organization. So my problem is that I cannot create new users for what I think should be a wireless.map.beta.com organization. I have also tried to create users using the commadmin command, and when I do a "commadmin user search" I can see that for the Store.Administrator it lists o=wireless.map.beta.com, which I hope is showing it as an organization. But a commadmin user create ends up failing stating that wireless.map.beta.com has missing entries.
The question is, how can I create email users so that they will be able to send/receive email as username@wireless.map.beta.com as the Store.Administrator currently can? I tried creating a "wireless.map.beta.com" organization in the DA but was stopped at the end with a "Violation of uniqueness" message but it did not tell me what the violation was.

"map.beta.com" is the domain that was automatically created. "wireless.map.beta.com" is a subdomain. You will likely see that within "map.beta.com".
REason you got the uniqueness warning, is that "wireless" is likely already there.
click on map.beta.com, and see if "wireless" is in there......

In the amconsole web page under the Identity Management tab I see three Organizations:
-business
-map.beta.com
-wireless.map.beta.com
When I select the name map.beta.com it shows:
Organizations (0 items)
When I select "Users" from the drop down menu I see two users:
-admin (Top Level Admin)
-testuser (Test User) [I created this one yesterday in the amconsole].
When I select the name wireless.map.beta.com it shows:
Organizations (0 items)
When I select "Users" from the drop down menu I see three users:
-admin (Store Administrator)
-msg-admin-mercury.cit.nih.gov-20061128184242Z(Messaging End User Administrator)
-testu (Test User) [I created this one yesterday in the amconsole].
I believe that the "admin" user under wireless.map.beta.com is the one I'm able to login as using Communications Express and successfully send/receive email as Store.Administrator@wireless.map.beta.com.
Separately, in the Delegated Administrator web page under the "Organizations" tab I see three organizations:
- ABC
-map.beta.com
-DEF
When I select "map.beta.com" it shows the same two users I saw under amconsole for "map.beta.com" (admin and testuser). When I select ABC or DEF I see three users each (user1, user2 and user3) which I assume were placed their during the installations as samples. Also, on the root Organizations page where I only see the three organizations, I did a "Search Organization by Name" for "wireless.map.beta.com" and it showed nothing.

Why are you in "amconsole"? Not useful for working with users/groups.Use DA.Amconsole won't be able to create mail users.
