Start with Sun's tutorials: http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/Begin under Trails Covering the Basics, and go through each section, and be sure to run the examples too. You'll have it down in no time.

no offense, but how can strangers set tasks for you?if you have a personality then youll have interests.create a task for yourself based on your interest.games? networking ("chats", ftp)? applets? computer utilities? etc.
