Sun Ultra 20 M2 nge install issues

I've got a shiny Sun Ultra 20 M2 by my desk that I can't manage to connect to a network under a fresh install of Solaris 10 6/06 (I can connect it to a network under Windows XP Professional x64 Edition) using the built-in NIC.

I've installed the nge drivers from the Sun Ultra 20 M2 Workstations Tools & Drivers CD and while they install just fine, when I try and set up the NIC using DHCP Solaris cannot contact the DHCP server. If I try and set up the NIC using a static IP address I cannot ping any host on the network; the nge driver seems to think it's sending out packets but I can't see any activity on the NIC or the switch it's connected to.

What makes this extra weird is that I've managed to install Solaris 10 6/06 and the nge driver successfully before, and (as I mentioned earlier) the NIC works under Windows (so I don't think there's anything wrong with network or cabling).

Any ideas?

i have the exact same problem. My Ultra 20 M2 was freezing about once a day, I phoned sun who told me to reinstall Solaris 10, which I did. Now I have tried everything, and still can't get my network card to work.

On startup it says nge0 link down then nge0 link up, but it then goes down again and back up which is strange.

Any ideas, I'm gonna throw my new Sun out the window soon!

I found this out the hard way - Solaris 06/06 does not come with support for the NVidia NIC's on the Ultra 20 M2 machine. I was trying to do a FLAR install over the network; when I booted with 06/06 the install script didn't see the NIC. No NIC = No netowrk and hence no access to my FLAR.

It turns out you have to install 06/06 and then add the patch from the driver disc that came with the M2 for the nge NIC.

Now once you properly add the nge patch (instructions in ReadMe file on the disc in the folder with the patch) you need to create the file:

/etc/hostname.nge-> the file simply contains the hostname

Then edit (vi) the /etc/inet/hosts file to add your hostname and IP address

And lastly edit the /etc/inet/ipnodes file to add the IP address as well.

Then the nge interface should work upon reboot. Now of course this doesn't help me with my FLAR, but at least the interface will work. Sun said the next release of Solaris (by January 2007) will have install support for the NIC on the Ultra 20 M2. I guess this is just the case of the hardware being ahead of the software.

I've purchased a Sun Ultra 20 M2 April 2007; I have had the same problems connecting to the network with a fresh install of Solaris 10.

I've configured the nge0 drivers on my Sun Ultra 20 M2 Workstations and set up the NIC using DHCP, Solaris still have difficulty contacting the DHCP server. If I try and set up the NIC using a static IP address I cannot ping any host on the network; the nge0 driver seems to think it's sending out packets but I can't see any activity on the NIC or the switch it's connected to.

I setup DNS and continue to have the same problems.

Any ideas?

On M2 then set up static I/P with 11/06 fresh install and did not use the supplied driver disk. nge driver was also patched with the latest nge patch (newer than the 11/06 driver).

Not tried DHCP, static IP is OK. Initially NIC seemed to send but receive nothing. A post on one of the news groups indicated that there is a problem with the driver not resetting properly and need to power off machine by pulling power cord from back.

Rebooted and come back fine ever since. Also noted that in dual boot configuration then when flip from XP to Solaris then need to unplug power to reset the NIC.

I hope Sun can fix this one soon in the drivers its a bit of a pain.
