IdM scalability issues

I have an IdM 5 implementation. Right now the load on our servers has went up 10 folder with a new system I am provisioning for. That being said I want to see if I can move certain tasks IdM performs to seperate servers.

Does anyone know if it is possible to have many servers pointing to one IdM instances each handling different tasks? I have already moved the Sun gateway service to another box which has drastically increased performance of the system. But it is still not enough. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
