Install Solaris 9 on a Ultra 25

As far as i investigated, this workstations are not running with Solaris 9/04.

While trying to make a custom Jumpstart with Solaris 9, it was not possible to boot kernel/sparcv9.

Does anybody know, if this workstations will be officially supporteted in the next future by Solaris 9 kernel patches?

Without this support, our team has to migrate to Solaris 10, even if our productive servers still are running Solaris 8 and 9.

Thanks for infos

When the Ultra 25 systems were released for General Availability (GA),

they shipped with Solaris 10 HW 1/06.

I would expect that to be the earliest distro of Solaris that is functional on that platform.

In my brief experience with Sun (less than 10 years' worth),

I've never seen them go backwards with one of their operating environments,

just to make something work. They only seem to go forward.

Solaris patches don't give you hardware support; only a full upgrade to a new OS distribution.

Solaris 9 has not had any new distribution releases since 9/05.

http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Software/

But hey !This is just a public user-to-user discussion forum.

Perhaps you can get more focussed information from Sun directly.

Use your service contract and open a support case.

Maybe someone in that organization can guide you with their official position on the subject.

Many of us would be interested in what you learn.

I don't think that Sun will backport the kernel support for these systems.Even Solaris 10 3/05 (FCS) doesn't contain the kernel (support) for these systems, which was added in HW1.Follow rukbat's advice and use your service contract.Michael

-LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:

A Solaris right-to-use license is required to run the Solaris 9

Operating System. UltraSPARC(TM) based Sun computer systems come

with the appropriate Solaris license, so customers purchasing new Sun

hardware are automatically licensed to use the Solaris 9 software. An

upgrade license is required to move from one release to another (for

example, from Solaris 8 to Solaris 9 operating system).

For OEMs and customers with non-Sun hardware, a Solaris license is

required. License fees vary depending on the hardware configuration.

Customers with non-Sun hardware must obtain a right-to-use license for

each system on which the Solaris software is installed. If their

hardware supplier is a Sun OEM, end users will get their Solaris

license from the hardware vendor. If a Solaris license is not

supplied, one must be purchased from a Sun authorized channel.

To obtain a new or upgrade license, please visit:

10. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

-

Q.Will the Solaris 9 9/05 HW software support all new Sun hardware that

was released since the original Solaris 9 9/05 Operating environment ?

A.No. Some systems such as those based on the UltraSPARC T1 processors

and the newer x86 systems are only supported by the Solaris 10

Operating System.

Q.How can I obtain a copy of the Solaris 9 9/05 HW software?

A.The Solaris 9 9/05 software will be available as a download as well as

a media kit containing a DVD with the software. The media kit can be

purchased for a nominal charge using part number SOLZS-09KC9A7M.

Q.Will the standard Solaris 9 Operating Environment run on the Sun Fire

V215, V245 and V445 systems?

A.No, a special version of the Solaris 9 software is required to run on

the Sun Fire V215, V245 and V445 systems, called Solaris 9 9/05 HW. It

has the same features as the Solaris 9 9/05 Operating Environment but

additional hardware support for the Sun Fire V215, V245 and V445

systems as well as the Sun Ultra 25 and 45 Workstations.

Q.Can I order the Solaris 9 9/05 HW OS preinstalled on Sun hardware

products?

A.No, all new Sun hardware products come preinstalled with the Solaris

10 Operating System. This release is provided as a convenience for

customers who are not yet ready to move to Solaris 10 and have an

existing installed based that is running the Solaris 9 Operating

Environment.

11. INTERNATIONALIZATION/LOCALIZATION SUMMARY

This update of Solaris 9 OS continues extensive language support

within a single, unified global product.

Thank you for the update and the document !

I just sent a customer comment regarding the Ultra 25 and Ultra 45 pages in the SSH (** ). The V215, V245 and V445 do already include this information. The V125 is still completely missing from the SSH.

One last note: The installation requires Solaris 9 9/05 HW, this is different from Solaris 9 9/05 (w/o HW).

Michael

** I was notified that the SSH pages for the Ultra 25, Ultra 45, Sun Fire V215, Sun Fire V245, and Sun Fire V445 have been updated. They are working on the Fire V125 page.

Hello,

the Ultra 45 is under warranty, Solaris 9 9/05 HW was announced on October 15th, 2006. Open a service case with Sun, maybe you have to order a the media kit or they will tell you a date when and where these images are available for download.

Unfortunately I couldn't locate the bookmark to the download page for previous releases (including some HW releases).

According to the following page this version is/will be available for download.

http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/releases.xml

A special version, Solaris 9 9/05 HW is available in both DVD or CD downloads to support new SPARC systems: Sun Ultra 25 and 45 Workstations and Sun Fire V215, V245 and V445 servers.

Thanks Michael, found it, and in the process of downloading it now. My problem is that the systems were bought for a lab and I am trying to get them to authenticate to (shudder) Active Directory. We bought a few PCs at the same time and I have FC4 not only authenticating but also giving our students access to their ADS shared filesystems. I have been able to get Solaris 10 talking to ADS and even joined the domain but authentication isn't happening. I found a "roadmap" to get Solaris 9 authenticating and I decided to give it a try so that I can get a couple of the new systems workable for our students while I continue to try to get Solaris 10 and ADS to cooperate.

Wish me luck, I'm going to need it.

Michael,

Btw, when download the s9-sparc 905 HW DVD media from sun.com download server, the sol-9-905hw-ga-sparc-dvd-iso-a.zip file test & md5 check error:

testing: sol-9-905hw-ga-sparc-dvd-iso-abad CRC 0084e20e (should be 5a018976)

At least one error was detected in sol-9-905hw-ga-sparc-dvd-iso-a.zip

I try download more times, the error still, do u know this file maybe incorrect by download server? the others 3 zip file -b/-c/-d is right.

thanks.

Hello,

Solaris 9 9/05 HW just adds support for some systems, but has no new features. I don't have access to any system that requires this release.

It's possible that one a of the download servers holds a bad copy of the first image part. On the other hand there serveral download servers and load balancers are used. After a succesful download of a file, you can't download the same file for a second time without re-registering. It's unlikely that you get each time the same server.

I would suggest that you use the feedback form on the Download Center page to report the issue.

A few years ago I reported a bad/dead download link, I got a response within a few hours and the link was fixed on the next day.
