Ultra 20 out of box, 2 auto-updates, now reboot cycles

Hi. I just unpacked a new Ultra 20, booted it up, set up the network and such (with pretty generic settings).

I logged in as root, ran the update manager application, and installed everything it suggested. Many of them failed with cryptic error messages, but it seemed that some of the updates were to the update manager itself, so I figured I would just try again after it was done. It said it needed to reboot, so I did that.

I then ran the update manager again. It still had a bunch of updates, so I installed them. About half failed, again with very little information, but some succeeded, including another one to the update manager itself. Rebooted again.

Now it goes into a cycle of White Sun logo screen, then grub, then trying to boot the Solaris 10 install, lots of text I can't even see it scrolls so fast, then restart into white Sun logo screen again, and loop forever.

Booting into failsafe mode works, but I cannot find any logs indicating what is going on.

How in the world can I diagnose this if the error messages scroll so fast I can't see them, and I don't see logs in failsafe mode? Perhaps there are logs somewhere there - I just don't know where to look (/var/log has nothing useful, dmesg doesn't tell me anything, nothing that looks useful in /var/sadm or /var/adm, etc.).

Help!

Jonathan,

If I recall correctly, the default pre-installed OS will be Solaris.

System logs are the MESSAGES files in /var/adm.

Linux keeps them elsewhere.

But ...Brand new?Less than an hour old?

Call Sun !

Open a techsupport case and a support engineer will call you back.

The patches are found at /var/sadm/spoolYou could try to run them manually (patchadd 123456-78) and see what the outcome is.But probably it's better to download the CDs of update 2 (6/06) boot from them and use update mode. Not optimal, but ...Cheers, Peter.

Has this issue been resolved? I am now having the exact same issue with my Ultra 20, and I haven't had any luck getting it working. I have an open case with Sun, but I haven't gotten very far with that yet either.

Thanks so much, I miss my Ultra 20, and I've put far too much time into the apps and config to just jumpstart it again if I don't absolutely need to!

Tim
