Ultra 20: Problems browsing on the web

Hi guys, I am new to this forum and also a new user with the Ultra 20 WOrkstation.

I am having difficulty running my DSL high speed internet on this machine using WIndows XP. I have all the connections with the modem set up properly and also am able to connect to the internet. The only thing I am unable to do is browse.

I tried pinging to my IP address and that seems to be working but when I ping to my default gateway, nothing is received (100% loss). Therefore I am unable to communicate with the modem through my computer.

Also I have 2 networking adapters enabled which are:

1394 Net Adapter

NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller

I am not too sure where the problem is, your help will be appreciated greatly.

Thanks,

Rizwan

Ultra20 and Windows?

Can't help you there, other than ask you to paste the output from ipconfig /all.

(Ultra20 and Solaris? That would be another story.)

All I can guess at is:

If you do not have a router between the computer and the DSL modem, then go buy one.

All broadband installations should use a router, even for just one computer.

It will give additonal hardware firewall protection, and you can use it for

any ISP-specific setup requirements, such as PPOE passwords and so on.

DSL companies know how to help you configure routers.

They may not want to help you with what they consider an uncommon computer brand name.

Let the router get a public IP address from the ISP

and let the router give you an "internal" non-public IP address via DHCP.

I hate dsl... you are hooked directly to the modem? no router inbetween? got your PPPOE all set up? how do you know you can access the internet if you can't browse?

and you have XPee on the Ultra 20?

does the dsl have a web interface?

sounds like a software problem, not a hardware problem...

oh well,

Once again, H.K. we seem to be thinking alike.<grin>Yup it's a Windoze issue. The ISP should be able to answer their questions.

Did you try to open the browser and connect to 192.168.1.1?It gives me a page where I can click on "connect" and the like.Cheers, Peter.

Peter, the original poster never gave us enough information on their configuration.

For all we know they're directly connecting the Ultra20

to the interface that translates their POTS wiring to the DSL RJ45 interface,

bypassing even the DSL modem.

They have an issue with a Microsoft OS running on a x86-based system

they should just contact their ISP.

The entire thread is outside the scope of this HARDWARE forum, as HaroldKarl so correctly pointed out.

Additionally DSL router/modems may be blocking ICMP, ping and traceroute tools under this protocol. Some routers can be configured to restrict any or all from /etc/protocols. As pointed out already this issue is not Sun hardware related.

Sorry guys...I have not logged on to this forum for a while and I forgot my original user ID so I created a new one.

Last 3 months I was not using the Ultra 20 but now that I have gone back to it, I'll answer your questions.

I have 3 computer hooked up through SMC router. One wireless internet on laptop, one HP desktop running windows, and Ultra 20 also running XP. The thing is, I am able to browse with the HP and the laptop but I cannot browse with the Ultra 20. When I ping, request is timed out so I do not know what's blocking the connection.

But using my HP computer I login to my router Admin page via 192.168.2.1. and I am able to see the IP address of my Ultra 20 in the DHCP client log but I cannot access the router admin page through the Ultra 20

I hope this information helps because I am getting pretty frustrated!!

Thanks

1st let me know.. Can you see your Ethernet driver (on Bard) installed properly?

for cheacking pls. go My network Place> View All connection.. then you will find , like it

1394 Net Adapter

NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller

If its ok.. Then Plug-in your DSL-Lan cable to your system,, Then follow the steps,

My Computer > My Network Place> View all Connection Create New Connection

Then It will appear,

Welcome New connection Wizard,

Then,

Next> Connect to Internet> Connect Using Broadband connection which needs user & password> Next> Enter your user id & password provide by your ISP>tnext..

Now its done!!!
