Is there anyway the single sign-on to IM using a web link?

Is there a way to single sign-on to IM using a web link instead of the channel provided with portal? I know this sounds strange but my customer is transitioning from a web server to a portal strategy and initially wants to single sign-on to IM with a web link instead of having the portal channel look.

Yes, you can login to IM through SSO using a the following Url: http://<hostname>:<webport>/im/IMLaunch.jsp
