Hi,
The only synchronisation software for the Macintosh that I am aware of is the software provided by Jintek (http://sync.jintek.com/). This is very old. I would recommend contacting your local Sun suport rep. and asking about this software and if any plans are in place for an update.
Shane.
Is Sun developing anything to do this? I have PC users using the Outlook Sync tool, but my school district is 90% MAC. Sun needs to address PDA sync and a good integrated mail/calendar client as an alternative to Outlook. Communications Express is buggy, and you can't sync a pda directly to it.
Am I the only one out there having this type of feedback from end users?
Hi,
On the alternative to Outlook, a calendar extension to Thunderbird was released just today which is now able to work with the Sun Calendar Server. I have been using various internal releases within Sun and find it to be extremely useful. A nice feature is that it also allow you to view other external calendars (I also use it to view my google calendar via an ICS link).

With regards to syncing PDA's with MAC's, I don't think you are the only one to ask for this. I would recommend contacting your Sun Account Manager and asking for this feature. Unfortunately as support staff myself and Jay only have limited influence.
There are other 3rd party products which provide over-the-air sync capability, therefore removing the reliance on sync-via-PC/MAC. This is your best bet going forward.

Shane.
Thanks for the pointer to lightning. I've been waiting for that!!!
I currently use NotifyLink to do my over the air sync, but I'm not overly happy with it. You said there are other 3rd party products.... could you name a few?
if you would rather not name them in public you can email at knabet@wou.edu
Hi,
Apart from notifylink I believe that Synchronica supports the JES stack. As per their website:
"Synchronica is working closely with Sun Microsystems to ensure compatibility of the Synchronica SyncML Gateway with Sun Solaris and Sun Hardware. The Synchronica SyncML Gateway now also supports the Java Enterprise System."
I don't have much experience in this area though so any feedback is welcome from other forum users.

Hi,
I wondered why that product rang a bell. I asked about pricing for evaluation software from that company some time back from memory; the response I ended up getting was as you noted -'we are bankrupt and are being bought out'. Based on the activity on the website it appears they are now back in business.
Regards,
Shane.
I recently did a quick eval of Synchronica's gateway software and the client for the Treo. I ran it against our test JES instance and it worked pretty much as advertised. I don't know who owns them now but their support for my trial was awesome. They sent me a 30-day eval as soon as I got things installed properly.
They have an Outlook client as well as a PocketePC client. They would seem like a logical player for a Mac syncronization client.
Jim
Hi Jim,
Thanks for the excellent feedback.
I had issues with just getting a copy of the eval software (we needed to buy-before-we-try which was never going to happen with unproven software...) Sounds like the new management has their act together. If you have any notes on tips/tricks/pitfalls/experiences you would like to share that would be great.
Regards,
Shane.
The software runs under jboss and fired up with minimal hassle on my FC5
box. They said it would run under Solaris x86_64 (our platform)
unmodified which didn't make sense to me until I realized the only real
requirement is a Java environment.
Once you get logged into the admin page, you set up all the JES-specific
things. Then download the client of choice (Treo 650, in my case).Oh
- you have to log in to a special page to self-enroll your device.I
have to say - it just worked.
I think you need to pay attention to your timezone settings and also
getting an inital synchronization to your device may require a
server-side setting but I didn't run that down with them. The software
takes over a minute to start but it includes copious logging so I was
able to track down my setting mistakes pretty quickly.
I tested client-initiated sync. If you have a SMPP provider, you can
have server-initiated synchronization. I would like to try that out as
we have a SMPP account with Simplewire (OpenMarket now). I'd like to
see a 4x per day syncronization for our Treo users to pick up their
appointments and get them into JES.
Jim
It looks like someone is developing an iCal sync with JES. It doesn't do recurring events at all, and you have to manually sync it, but it is a start. With the iPhone coming out in June it sure would be nice to for this project to take off.
