Unable to boot sunfire v240

My solaris box (sunfire v240) no longer boots properly. It seemed to have crashed for some reason overnight and now it won't fully boot.

When it powers up it gets as far as displaying:

Rebooting with command: boot

Boot device disk0:aFile and args:

\

on the monitor I hooked up to it. The keyboard is unresponsive.

The hdd0 power light is flashing continuously but the main power light doesn't come on at all, neither does the main error light.

The machine, in this state, is inaccessable to the network and I can't get a serial console either (8N1 9600).

Any ideas of a way forward?

Cheers,

Charlie

Hi!It's look like disk0 is bad.For more information good idea boot from installation CD-ROM in single mode. In this case You can try mount disk0 and seeinformation on it. So you can start disk test ( format -> analize -> any test that not destroy data).Regards.

Also try removing the monitor and keyboard, then bootit should for the console to the serial port.

Thanks but sadly there is no CD-ROM for this machine. We got it pre-installed from Sun.

Ok, I've tried to connect to the ALOM but I'm not sure I'm going about it right. Is it correct that the ALOM connector is a serial port that takes RJ-45 and not a standard 9-pin serial port.

The back of my box has both. There's a label that says serial mgmt at the bottom, then the RJ-45 and then the standard 9-pin serial port is on top of that. Is the placement of the 9-pin just a conincidence or is it actually an interface to the ALOM?

I never set up net mgmt but I certainly will once this is over.

Cheers,

Charlie

ALOM is RJ45 and user serail mgmt ALOM port the net mgmt is for networked ALOM.From ALOM you can power on/off machines remotly. If you are not using ALOM then you should and you are missing a lot.

Sorry for lot of typos in first response.Use serial mgmt first and then configure the net mgmt and your life will be easy.
