root account continuously reboots

I've caused an odd situation to occur on my Ultra 10 WS running Solaris 9 and CDE. I was installing a java-based program from the CDROM and the system apparently hung. I tried ^C out but no response. I opened another window and attempted to kill -9, which also went into lala land. So I opened a third window and tried to run init 5 and this too became unresponsive. After about 15min I manually powered down the box by holding the power button.

The system came back up without any issues. But, when I logon as root in the CDE I see the three windows and a shutdown dialog (which I can't press with the mouse) and the system runs the init 5 command. I can logon as any user other than root and the systems is unaffected. But, logging on as root results in the init 5 execution as previously described.

Any ideas as to how I might be able to recover from this? I have no idea at this point where to start!

Thanks in advance for any assistance you might provide.

I was able to solve my problem by some determination and blind luck for timing. I found that if I pressed Stop-A at just the right point when I logged on I had just enough time to use the arrow key to cancel the init 5 after I typed the "go" command to reenter the CDE. What a bizarre deal this was!
