general SUN support options & licensing questions
I'm looking into options to minimize support costs on some servers which are no longer "mission critical" in our data center.
If I contract with a third party for hardware support, does SUN offer software only contracts?
If I contract with a third party for both hardware and software support, does SUN offer a contract option which includes the right to use and patch access (I'd still like access to the knowledge base and online patch access)?
I've got older equipment running Solaris 7, 8 and 9. What are the licensing requirments to upgrade? Is there a cost involved?

Actually, getting Sun Sales to call you back about legacy support is difficult. I tried. I don't think anybody works there anymore :-(
Somewhere on the web site is way to sign up for Sunsolve which will give you all the patches and documents. It's like $200 per year via credit card. There are more expensive options that let you open support cases. We have hardware-only support from a 3rd pary and that's what we do.

From my experiences, when going throught third party vendors, they will actually turn around and use SUN for technical support. Not sure if this is the case with your considered vendor, but you should ask.
