Find local server

Hi all

After reading the ThinkThin, I got my Sunrays to boot using DNS alone. We however have offices all over South Africa in all the major centres. Has anyone come up with a solution for booting Sunrays off the closest server rather than just the ones listed in the servers= directive in the .parms files?

You could modify your DHCP tables so that different subnets get told that they're in a different DNS subdomain, then configure DNS so that each of those subdomains contains a sunray-servers record that points to the appropriate Sun Ray servers for the DTUs on those subnets.

Or you could use a DNS server that supports "views" (that's what BIND calls this feature) such that the server can give different answers to each sunray-servers lookup according to the source subnet of the DNS query. This is the simplest option if your DNS server supports it and if you have some control over the DNS configuration.

Or you could have all of the DTUs initially go to a few servers that have been configured to use the AMGH feature to immediately redirect the DTUs to an appropriate server.

Thanks for the reply!

Unfortunately the DNS side is totally out of my control and in the hands of MS AD "professionals" :-/

Your last option looks interesting - and I have found tons of references on google - helps if you know what to look for!
