Network Stopped working?

SPARC Ultra 5 running Solaris 10 running Apache as a Web Server.

My SPARC no longer has network access. When I reboot the server, I recieve the msgs "hme0: fault detected in device; service degraded" and "hme0: no response from Ethernet network: link down -- cable problems?"

Prior to this new problem. This box with Solaris 10 has been working fine for months.

I live in Florida and have lightening often. How can I tell if my network card is fried, if I have a virus, need to start a deamon, or something else. I would GREATLY appreciate any ideas, guidance, or help.

Thx - Mike

You can test the network hardware at the OBP.

You could confirm or eliminate faulty hardware in about fifteen seconds.

Your Ultra-5 platform uses OBP 3.x

The OBP 3.x Command Reference Manual can be found at Docs.Sun.Com

http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/806-1377-10

Begin inside Chapter 2 for guidance with test net as well as with watch-net.

They give you quick yes/no results.

Download a copy of that manual for future reference:

Keep in mind that if your onboard NIC is indeed 'fried',

you cannot use a generic card that's sold for use inside a PC.

Openboot might not even acknowledge a generic card's existence.

Since a replacement card would be used as your primary networking interface,

you should use a Sun-qualified adapter card, even if it's from EBAY.

... such as the 501-5019 [ X1033A ] Ethernet adapter.

Have you tried a different cable, or tried a new hub/switch/router ?

It may be time to start to save for surge protection equipment.
