SunPCI And Windows XP SP2

Good afternoon,

I see the forum has changed since I was on this last. I noticed that in the Other Sun Hardware the messages prior to March 2006 do not exist. If my brain is still working correctly, I recall reading that the SunPCI cards had problems with Windows XP SP2. The write of the post told the readers to avoid upgrading to SP2.

My question is about SP2. Has things changed where one could upgrade to Windows XP SP2?

Thank you,

Hello Fred,

thanks to google cache you can locate your posting from 30 October 2004.

I don't know if you can apply SP2 without breaking the installation.

Maybe you can search SunSolve.

There are many many Windows-centric discussion forums that have

discussion threads on the subject of what they term "slipstreaming"

various patches, and/or service packs, and/or device drivers into a CD.

My sense after speed-reading through those threads, is that

there are valid and viable ways to merge a service pack into,

... let's say ...

an original WinXP CD disk that was purchased prior to the existence

of ANY service packs. The installation is patched as soon as you complete it.

A google search for "slipstream windows" seems to find a few appropriate

sites. At least enough to begin the research.

Even if this isn't ever successful for the SunPCi cards,

it's a procedure that may come in handy some day.

Good afternoon rukbat,

Your information is good for a Windows environment, but not addressing my question. In the documentation for SunPCI II, it states it will support Windows XP. In the documentation for SunPCI II, it states it will support Windows XP Service Pack 1A. In a thread that doesn't exist anymore on this forum, someone wrote that the SunPCI cards have problems with Service Pack 2.

After read that, I have avoided letting Windows try to update itself to Service Pack 2. My question is to find out if this problem has been solved in some fashion. Another writer suggested that I look at SunSolve for my answer. There are five screens of hits for SunPCI and Windows XP. Of what I could access, none of these hits addressed this issue.

So, do you have the answer to this question?

Thank you,

Fred

Sorry, Fred, but I do not.

I had not reviewed the links to the earlier cached threads

so I had presumed the issue was "how can I successfully apply SP2"

rather than "can it run well AFTER the service pack is applied".

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

... perhaps it's just an issue with the default Windows firewall from SP2,

or the newer Windows WGA auto-update daemon that caused the original SP2 problems?

Many potential items to think about ...

I have tried the following using a SunPCI II Pro card in a Sun Blade 2000 running Solaris 9 all seems OK so far:

1) Install XP Pro version 2002 retail (no internet connection during the install)

2) Download the SP2 exe from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-824 5-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en (performed the download on a Solaris box)

3) Install the SP2 exe from a USB memory stick pluged into the SunPCI II Pro card.

4) Get an internet connection to the SunPCI II Pro via its onboard ethernet. Activated Windows XP pro OK and used the WGA auto-update daemon to load the latest updates.

5) Used the SunPCI II Pro to create this post.

Next up is to move to running the SunPCI II Pro under Solaris 10 (I did have the Sun PCI II Pro running Windows NT under Solaris 10, but the original disk Solaris 10 was installed on died during the Windows XP install...)

I used to have a 1500 w/ the latest model SunPCI and there was no issue whatsoever with applying SP2.

Good morning everyone,

I finally found the courage to apply SP2 to my installation. So far everything looks great. Maybe the person who had the problem eons ago was dealing with something different from my installation.

Thank you one and all for your efforts to help me. We can consider this a completed thread.
