StorEdge Enterprise Backup 7.1 - aaaarggh.

Hi,

I'm trying to backup some filesystems to a StorEdgeL8 jukebox but it is refusing to work... tho it all worked flawlessly last month.

(I'm quite happy to admit it could be something i'm doing wrong...)

If i run nwadmin and do a 'startnow' under Customize -> Groups. the process all starts off but then it reports that there is no tape in the device and it needs to load a tape. It then getsstuck in a loop, saying...

media info: unload retryfor jukebox `StorEdge_L8' failed - will retry again.

media info: unload retryfor jukebox `StorEdge_L8': sleeping 30 seconds

I then can't mount or unmount or inventory as it reports an eject operation is currently taking place.

the only way i've found to get out of this is to stop the networked daemons, and then start it up again.

(using ps -elf | grep -i nsr, i think this is the process that 'sticks'...

/usr/sbin/nsr/nsrjb -j StorEdge_L8 -O1 -I -f /dev/rmt/0cbn -S 1

)

Anyway, having restarted networker and nwadmin, i tried to do an inventory but again it got stuck on an eject...

Tue 04:29:37 PM /dev/rmt/0cbn Eject operation in progress

then ten minutes later the nwadmin messages showed...

Tue 04:39:38 PM media warning: /dev/rmt/0cbn opening: DRIVE_STATUS_NEED_INIT

Tue 04:49:39 PM media warning: /dev/rmt/0cbn opening: DRIVE_STATUS_NEED_INIT

Tue 04:49:39 PM /dev/rmt/0cbn read open error: drive status is The drive is not ready - it requires an initialization command

Tue 04:49:45 PM media info: unload errorfor jukebox `StorEdge_L8' detected. Retrying

Tue 04:49:45 PM media info: unload retryfor jukebox `StorEdge_L8': sleeping 30 seconds

Tue 04:50:15 PM media info: unload retryfor jukebox `StorEdge_L8' failed - will retry again.

Tue 04:50:15 PM media info: unload retryfor jukebox `StorEdge_L8': sleeping 30 seconds

So i'm back in the loop. And i'll have to stop the 'networker' daemons to get anywhere.

Any ideas?

How do i just get it all working again?

Cheers,

mark.

I've just found the jbverify command, which gives the following...

Jbverify is running on host {MYMACHINESNAME}

no enabled stand alone devices found.

Processing jukebox devices...

Processing jukebox StorEdge_L8:

Testing drive 1 (/dev/rmt/0cbn) of JB StorEdge_L8

unable to load tape into drive 1 (/dev/rmt/0cbn) as it seems to be loaded!

skipping to next drive in list...

Jukebox StorEdge_L8 on {MYMACHINESNAME} successfully processed.

Finished processing jukebox devices.

Summary report of jbverify

I don't like the look of that 'Fail' in the report, but the tape drive itself (the physical hardware) is ok. There are no lights lit, but 'ready'. And it happily does whatever commands you enter on it's own display.

Hello to anyone reading this thread.......

I have tried jbverify again since posting last and have had 'Pass' in Status of the summary report, but still the L8 will not work!

It is like the Server thinks it can see the L8, but isn't actually!

I don't know what to do...........
