Solaris 10 on a MacBook?
I've searched Google, but come up with nothing I can understand well enough. I don't want to triple-boot, since I don't have a copy of XP and don't plan on buying one. I have the 5 Solaris 10 CD ISO's burned onto CD's (I don't own a DVD burner), and want to be able to double-boot OSX and Solaris on my MacBook. When I boot using the first CD, it hangs right away at a part saying something like "Loading 2 ...." Does anyone know how I could do this? I gather other people have done it before, judging from Google results, but I can't follow their procedures. I'm new to Solaris and just learning Java, and want to install it because Xcode runs too slowly on my laptop, and NetBeans isn't a Universal Binary, so there isn't really any fast way to write Java on it.

Alternatively, can anyone suggest a good universal binary Java IDE besides Xcode? I'd rate that as a good answer too.

Specifically, the message says "Loading stage2 . . . .", and shows a flashing underscore beneath it. The CD drive spins for about a minute, and then slows to a stop. I've left this screen on overnight, so I'm pretty positive it's not actually loading anything.

This is bug 6412224, "GRUB hangs when no i8042 is present". http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6412224Is is supposed to be fixed in current Solaris Express releases.

Well, I just downloaded it last Saturday; unless they've updated it since then, it's not fixed for this model. Is it possible the installation CDs are a different version then the DVD? Otherwise, I guess I'm just stuck.

Well, a user complained that the snv_44 installation media was hanging,
although snv_44 was supposed to contain the fix for bug 6412224
http://opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?messageID=51694#51722
My attempt for an explanation is that the installation packages on the
snv_44 CD/DVD contain the fixed grub, but the grub that is used when
you boot from the CD/DVD hasn't be updated to include the same fix.
The reply http://opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?messageID=51694#51725
contains a hint that this would be fixed with snv_47.
Which version did you download last Saturday? Is it snv_47 or newer?

I've just verified that the Solaris Express: Community
Release:build snv_50 DVD does indeed fix the GRUB
stage2 boot hang on an Intel iMac.

I've booted an Apple iMac from the snv_50 DVD into the
installer Xsun GUI.

Well, then it looks like I must have gotten an earlier version somehow. I'm going to try downloading it again soon.
