Howto brake or change a root password
Hello, good afternoon.
My company bougth a SunFire V120 and send to Phillipines for work in a project. Unfortunately the projects was rejectec and the equipment return to us. Now, we like to use these box for others projects, but we cant access to any login acount and the person who's make the configuration is gone.
We only have the Sun box, nothing more. I'am conect via console using the A LOM port. When i turn on the equip, i see the memory initialization, some check parameters, the OS version (SunOS 5.8) and the "login" promt.
The SunFire, don't contain a CD or DVD-ROM lector.
If i conect with the Serial B port using the console, i dont see any mesaage.
How can i change the root password?
Thanks and regards.

Normally machines without cd/dvd are configured in a jumpstart/netboot environment.
Essentially theres no way to fix it without such an environment.
You need to netboot single user, mount the disks and edit the shadow file.
Alternatively, you could just jumpstart the machine from scratch up to solaris 9/10.

To alex:
The procedure that you linked to requires the system to have a CD drive,
so that the system can be booted from Solaris installation media.
The original poster noted that their computers do not have any optical drives.
The first response in this forum thread is their only alternative...
... they would need to jumpstart the systems, all over again.

Rukabt,
Read the procedure one more time...
[...]
Boot the system from the network if an installation server or remote CD or DVD drive is not available.
ok boot net -s
[...]
If there is a Jumpstart Server no problem for using the boot net -s
Regards !
