Can't get there from here!

After hours of downloading and assembling the separate parts, to make-up one single DVD (this download was the Windows only version), I placed the platter into this HP AMD-64 laptop, to install the OS. The first part that came up on the screen was legible, and it gave me a choice of installing Solaris, and the other two choices seemed to offer an installation with serial terminals. I did try all three methods. The results were abysmal. All I got was gibberish on the plain black screen. The installation then halted, and froze the machine dead.

Is there something that I didn't understand? Does this OS expect me to install it using a terminal, like on a main-frame machine? Most new computers now, only have USB ports, and no serial or parallel ports. Did someone goof, and put the wrong OS version in the Windows only download page?

There was a lot of room left on the 1st DVD, that I could have also burned the "Companion" file in there. However, I had to waste another DVD platter just to put that small file in there. Now I'm wondering if I should throw those two platters in the trash can, or is there sometning that I didn't understand?

Also, I was wondering how good is this OS for supporting wireless networking? Does the OS provide ndiswrapper? Or, does the os directly support a good variety of wireless cards? Does this OS also support wireless mouse and keyboards? Is is only designed to install in desktop models? Does it support AMD-64 cpu's? Am I expected to write my own scripts and drivers?

I've downloaded and installed a lot of Linux's before, but this SOL-10 DVD installer is the plainest that I have ever seen. No help files, no splash screen, and no visible way to see how to get out of a hang-up.

Thanks, and cheers!

onederer,

Would you give me the link you used to download Solaris?

Can you be more specific about which HP laptop you are using? A specific model, perhaps?

Solaris supports a graphical Java-based installation as well as a console window version. It should determine which you can run.

RE: wireless networking - Solaris supports a limited number of WiFi cards. Please refer to the Hardware Compatibility List at http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/data/sol/

Incompatible hardware might be one reason for the hang.

Hi, I was trying to load it on a HP nx6125 with 1G Ram. I was successful loading onto a noname brand AMD 64 bit desktop.

The last bit of 'debug' code then no more action - maybe it means something to somebody!

[code]

...

load 'drv/ib' id 80 loaded @ ....

installing IB, Module id 80.

.

.

unloading ib, module id 80, loadcnt 1.

.

.

load 'misc/pcmcia' id 86 loaded ....

load 'drv/pcic' id 85 loaded ....

installing pcic , module 85 loaded @ ......

installing pcic, module 86

'misc/fctl' id 89 loaded @ ......

load 'dev/fcp' id 88 loaded @ .......

[\code]

Now I can have many coffee's and nothing happens!

Greetings:

I am having the same exact problem. I have a Compaq R4000 CTO laptop (custom to order) with an AMD 64 4000.

I get the screen with colored garble letters after the "SunOS Release 5.10.........." paragraph.

I'm starting c++ programming class and in school they are using Sun computers. I wanted to install this on my lappy so I can get used to the unfamiliar environment.

If anyone knows a solution, please say!
