Can't login at all with root!!! HELP ME PLEASE!!!

I have installed the latest update of Solaris 10 for an x86 machine. After I got finished installing it, I tried logging in. It wouldn't let me log in as root at all, even when I used the password I entered during installation. I reinstalled the OSthree times, all to no avail even when I used a simple password during installation and login. What else can I do? Thanks in advance for any help.

Please give more details about how you try to login and what kind of messages you're getting.

Each time I use the root password I entered during installation, it says: "Login failed. Please try again."

You don't specify how you're logging in. Are you on the console or using a network service?Root cannot log in over telnet by default. Login on the console and create another user for yourself.-- Darren

If you are logging in on the console, does the password have any strange characters in it?If you do a single-user boot, does the root password work at that login prompt?-- Darren

I am using the console login, not a telnet network service. I tried console but it still didn't work. I am using Solaris as an extra OS for one computer. I will have three OS's if I can get Solaris to work, Windows XP Pro, Fedora Core 5 (Red Hat Linux 7), and Solaris. I am also considering adding Knoppix, Snappix, and Morphix to my rapidly growing collection of operating systems. The characters for the password do not apper, but I have found out that this is normal and it should occur that way. I haven't tried the single-user boot thought. Could you give instructions as on how to do that? Thanks.

By the way, until I get Solaris installed, I will use Windows XP. I am trying to install the drivers for my new video card, an ATI Radeon 9800, and I keep getting an error message when I start installation that reads: Install Error: 0x80040707 InstallShield will terminate. I tried the compatibility wizard and set it for Windows 98/ME. I got as far as the actual install, where it was putting the drivers on my computer when I got another error, this one reading: Install Error: 0x80040303. InstallShield will terminate. Does anyone have any advice on what I could do to fix these errors? Also, please answer my first post and tell me how I can access root and do a single-user login. Thanks.

If you are using GRUB (installed by Solaris) you will have 2 choices.Solaris and Solaris Failsafe. Failsafe will take you to singleuser and you will be prompted for root-password during startup.
