Solaris Management Consol
Hello, Everybody!
Sorry for stupid question, using solaris not long time:
Can't get in SMC.
Typing in command line:#smc
Then error:
Open Toolbox: http://janye:898/toolboxes/smc. tbx failed
Open Toolbox: http://janye:898/toolboxes/smc. tbx failed
What to do with That!?

I have the same problem (tho obviously replace the 'janye' with my machine's name).
On my machine it occured after running sys-unconfig to re-setup the network settings.
I guess we just need to get SMC to point to the correct toolbox, but i'm not sure how... commands smcconf and smcregister seem most promising but i'm not certain.

I've sorted it... and how simple it was too!
Didn't need to mess around too much at all, and ignore my previous comments about smcconf and smcregister.
start smc
then go 'open toolbox' - if you wait a second or two then two existing toolboxes will appear listed. Something like...
http://[machinename]:898/toolboxes/smc.tbx
http://[machinename]:898/toolboxes/this_computer/this_computer.tbx
select the smc.tbx one and open it.
This gets SMC working again. To set it so you needn't open the toolbox everytime, go to Preferences (in smc) and under the console tab alter the 'home' toolbox to the correct address (to the smc.tbx file).

# 5
I'd like to be able to, but sadly i don't speak Russian... :(
Sorry, my previous description was from memory. I now have an smc open so can describe it properly...
Click 'Console' menu and choose 'Open Toolbox...' (or just do ctrl-O)
Wait a second, then under Toolboxes two options will appear:
Management Tools
This Computer (name)
Choose the 'Management Tools' one (it's URL will show in the bar below as: http://[name]:898/toolboxes/smc.tbx )and click Open.
You now have the correct toolbox open to use SMC as you would expect.
To get SMC to use the correct toolbox by default, click 'Console' menu and choose 'Preferences'. Within the 'Console' tab of preferences window, there is a 'Home toolbox:' section where you can set the location of the default toolbox. Enter the correct URL (i.e. http://[name]:898/toolboxes/smc.tbx )
Then click Apply/OK and you're done.

Iskauser,I think you smc deamon got corrupted look in the /etc/rc3.d/ the script that run the smc service and stop and start it again, other wise just reboot the server. I hope that helps,Josh

I just thought i'd add that i've recently had a different machine where the smc would run ok but all the components showed red stop signs and wouldn't work.
To solve this, i had to restart the service...
exit smc, then
# /etc/init.d/init.wbem status
- to check if it's running or not
# /etc/init.d/init.wbem stop
- to stop it
# /etc/init.d/init.wbem start
- to start it back up
# smc
- and all should be ok (tho' i had to stop and start it twice - ?!)

Regarding my above post, i've discovered that the SMC server keeps failing and i don't know why.
Everytime i want to use SMC i have to follow my above procedure. When i type smc it loads up but won't open the toolbox (has the red stop signs).
If i check the status of init.wbem, then i get...
Connection refused:
May be due to improper server shutdown.
Any ideas, please?
[btw, i've just realised this thread is in Solaris10... whereas my solution/prob is on solaris9]

Has anyone managed to fix this problem yet? I've had it and fixed it so let me know.RegardsMatt

So, Matt, what was the fix?

I found that if I specify that if I go to Console->Open Toolbox and enter the URL of http://localhost:898/toolboxes/smc.tbx I will get the console for the localhost. It appears that the port 898 is only open on the loopback interface.

Hi,
I have the same problem and I tried to start the smc server manually as been written in an admin book. The server starts but the toolbox is still not loadable. This issue I found in Sol 10 6/06
I installes on an other machine Solaris 10 11/06 and there is not this issue. Even it is not in Solaris Express build 50.
The prblem is, that I cannot use Solaris 10 11/06 because of another issue with pdf files -> se my posting of today.
Would be nice if someone will have a solution
Sonja

I've got this problem fixed on my machine by removing the patch, EXCEPT I can't get into the "users" control panel! Everything else works, but the "users" panel fails with "unable to authenticate" (which is weird because it authenticates fine in the other panels). Suggestions?
