Experience on new V125?
Hello,
I'm wondering about some hardware details of the new V125s.
According to sun.com website it ships with 1.0 Ghz UltraSPARC IIIi, will that one be approx. comparable to an older V210 with 1GHz UltraSPARC IIIi or are there more things to think about like the System clock frequency (on V210 it's 167MHz according to prtdiag).
It seems that this server has no integrated hdd mirror (raid 1) capability, what would be an easy way to get the drives mirrored without using software mirroring?
I would like the server to startup without any problems if the first disk fails.
Am I going to need external storage? The StorEdge 3120 looks interesting because of it's small size but usage of SCSI harddrives is raising the costs enormously.
Thanks for sharing your experience

The Sun Fire V125 is a brand new model.
http://www.sun.com/servers/entry/v125/
It is just beginning to ship to customers, therefore very few
forum contributors will have experience with it.
It is to be positioned at the bottom of the server product line,
as the least expensive SPARC-based systems.
For proper information, and to help you decide whether this platform
can meet current needs and your future needs, I suggest you
contact Sun and speak with someone in their pre-Sales support department.
That is why they are on the payroll -- to answer that type of question.

For a very long time now Sun shops have been relying on Solaris Volume Manager and Open Boot Prom to configure the system to mirror the boot disks. During the initial configuration of the system, the admin would configure the OBP to boot select disks in sequence. When the system boots the primary boot disk and if it fails, OBP software will select the next disk in the sequence. I think you can have up to four disks configured this way, I have only ever used two disks though. Same can be said for external arrays, Solaris Volume Manager can be used to configure the disks in a JBOD too. I have some detailed documentation only available internally to Sun about the V125 and I'd be happy to provide any further information about the system. I am involved with Sun Sales, but I mainly provide Sun pre-sale technical support, at the end of the day I will try to provide information to you from a neutral standpoint.
