Hello,
Is it possible to install Solaris 8 on a V215 server?
I know it's not supported, but could it be done for test purposes?
V215 ? I can't locate a V215 in the Sun System Handbook.
If Solaris 8 isn't listed under Minimum Supported Solaris[tm] Operating Environment Versions, you won't be able to install this version. The listed versions contain the support for this system, earlier don't.

No, there's actually a description of the V215 at the SunStore.
New bezel appearance, same 1U formfactor as the V210, 1.5GHz US-IIIi,
ships with Solaris 10 preloaded.

It appears to be too new for the SSH staff to have prepared any support pages.
The original poster should call their account rep, else Sun Sales directly for whatever info is needed.
I agree that Sol-8 will never run on the hardware.
If Sun has used a new systemboard, then Sol-9 may not even run.
How embarrassing... I'm Sun pre-sale technical support and I'm not aware of this new product... though I have been working on storage more these days... better get stuck into MySun quick!! Seriously though, Solaris 8 is not listed as being supported on this platform:
http://www.sun.com/servers/entry/v215/specs.xml#anchor5
I know that it's not supported from sun with solaris8 on the V215.
But a strange thing is, there will be support for solaris 8 beginning 11/06 on the V125 which seems to be a server in the same "family" as the V215....
So, my question still remains: Is it possible (without support from sun) to install solaris 8 on th V215?
/F
Follow rukbat's advice !

Not supported means, won't run and not maybe break something.
These versions lack the proper kernel, that's the reason it won't even boot.
Last ship date (LSD) for Solaris 8 is February 16, 2007.
This is a link to the description

I think when the V125 is shipped, they include a CD similiar to the OECD that you use to boot from and launch the Solaris 8 installation.

No, if the information from http://www.sun.com/servers/entry/v215/specs.xml#anchor5 is accurate.
These forums are only user-to-user, call Sun.

Additional to the information provided by Michael and rukbat ( I've done a bit of homework on this line of systems this week end! ), despite the fact that these server's are in the same family each machine has different expansion bus technology. The V125 supports a single 64-bit 33/66 MHz full-length PCI 2.2-compliant slot, but the V215 supports One PCI-X 133 MHz/64-bit full-height/short slot and one PCIe low-profile/short x8 lane slot with 16-way connector ( comments welcome on this theory from all ). Solaris 8 may not support this technology in it's Kernel, so as Michael suggested contact Sun pre sale for more information.
Just an update.
I asked on todays (October 11th, 2006) Expert Exchange
maal (Q): The V125 will suprisingly add support for Solaris 8 2/04 starting 11/06 (maybe with something like OECD with the proper kernel). Someone asked on the (user-to-user) Sun Hardware Support Forum if the V215 (which was announced at the same time) supports Solaris 8 as well.
Christopher Jobling (A): V125 is a cost reduced V210 running at a slower CPU frequency, & as V210/V240 support Solaris 8 it made sense to continue this on V125. V215/V245 are completely new products with a new I/O architecture & SAS drives & will not support Solaris 8 (which has announced end of life).

m-lennon was correct !

I failed to mention the SAS feature, but I actually suspected that PCIe was the main issue. I was quite interested in the V125 platform when I first looked it up ( after rukbat pointed out availability of this new range ). I would have considered the system as an ideal hardware upgrade option for the V100, V120 and Netra t1/X1 series of systems rather than the V210. I was disapointed with Sun's end user prices on the system however, I realize that the SPARC platforms are high quality and generally have a very good lifespan ( I have a t105 that is 5 years old and I've never had to replace any parts only disks ), but I think Sun will find it difficult to compete with the x86 entry level web application server market ( even Sun's own x2100 is better value from a consumer standpoint ).
