Sun X64 servers
We have a bunch of 240 and 210 for weblogics and websphere.
I am looking at x64 servers (cheaper).
Are the x64s run x86 solaris & they are binaries incompatible to sparc on the 240/210?
is that mean I have to find weblogics and websphere for x86? Are there such things?
Thanks
John

Are these other servers going to be Sun-branded?
If yes, then you may get good answers from Sun's pre-sales techsupport.

They will have access to hardware and software compatibility.
If those are not going to be Sun-branded computers,
then you're asking a software question that is outside the scope of this HARDWARE forum.

Sure, the x64 systems (x2100, x2200, x4100, etc.) run Solaris. In fact, it comes pre-loaded on their system disks.
As for binary compatibility, x86 and sparc are different CPU architectures, so binary compatibility is not assured.
I would contact the weblogics and websphere vendor and see what their "verification" chart shows for supported builds. Just about every application vendor has an x86 distribution available these days.

If you are planning to purchase new x64 servers and just move the applications over from the SPARC systems is will not work. In terms of license, you should be able to maigrate the license over to the new systems, I think that the license is per user for IBM products like this. You will have to download the binaries for the x64 platofrom and reinstall the software on the new servers. the keywords to understand the differences between the architectures is SPARC big endian and x86 little endian.
