suspected DNS problem - but i'm not sure

Hi,

I've recently been trying to setup a solaris9 server (MYSERVER, below) to keep time by checking an ntp server (NTPSERVER).

However, it is not working and the following error is reported to/var/adm/messages...

Jul 20 11:00:15 MYSERVER xntpd[4873]: [ID 381522 daemon.error] couldn't resolve `NTPSERVER.domain', giving up on it"

I've checked/etc/resolv.conf and/etc/defaultrouter and the information is good.

I think it is a DNS problem though because when i try to ping a domain name (eg. www.google.com) i get 'unknown host'. But if i ping the actual IP address of google.com it returns 'alive'.

(It won't ping NTPSERVER.domain either, or even just NTPSERVER - both MYSERVER and NTPSERVER have the same domain, but are on different subnets of the network)

Can't work it out... any idea hugely appreciated.

Cheers,

mark.

It seems all i needed to do was add "dns" to the line 'hosts' in nsswitch.conf and everything is working ok.
