Update Manager and Update Connection clarification

Last week, I used Update Manager to install several patches on my Ultra 10 that had a 9 GB disk. This is when I initially registered my system when I opened Update Manager for the first time. Then a few days ago, I upgraded my system to a larger disk and did a fresh install of OS 10 (06/06).When I went to use Update Manager on the frest system to apply patches, it didn't ask for system registration information. My first question is; why? My system has to be registered, however, because I've since used Update Manager to analyze and install selected individual patches. (I'm having trouble installing multiple, large size security patches. The downloading window hangs for hours and I eventually have to kill the process ... but that's another issue)

When logging into Sun Update Connection, I don't see any systems listed in my profile page. Is this because I don't have a service contract? I don't want to manage my system remotely, but I thought Update Connection would show the registered systems.I'm just using Update Manager to apply the analyzed security/recommended/generic patches.

Hi.

In answer to your second question, yes, you'll need a service contract to use the Update Connection site.

As to why you weren't required to register, I believe the Sun Update asset ID is tied to the hostid of the machine, so even when upgrading the OS and swapping out the system disk, the host will be recognised.
