Solaris 10 U2 trying to get the latest recommeneded patches...

Hey,

I have some issues with SUC. Somehow the "smpatch update" starts working fine but for awhile nothing progresses anymore and the update process is doing nothing. This is a S10U2 SPARC system, freshly installed.

Here are the details:

Update 121017-04 will not be downloaded since it already exists in the download directory.

121015-02 has been validated.

121021-03 has been validated.

121019-02 has been validated.

What can I do ? I have tried to kill the smpatch update processes. Then remove from /var/sadm/spool the tmp patches and then try smpatch update again. Sometimes this works sometime it doesnt.

Any other way to get the patches from sunsolve !?

I have the same issue. The download stalls. The currently (unfinished) patch has the fixed size of 52428 Bytes (this from your posting, but i remember ths value). If you restart the download this patch is successfully downloaded until the download stalls again with one of the other patches.

I had the issue even with earlier versions (FCS, U1).

Hello Stefan,

Any workarounds !?

I thought about launching my script from another one that monitors if the filesize of the unfinished patch is 52428 Bytes and hasn't changed within the last 30-60 seconds. In case the size didn't change, kill the process and restart the script.

How long is smpatch left in the hung state before killing it?I have seen issues like this before (with the 52428 byte file partial download), but the download usually completes on its own when left for a while.

Hi again.

Could you run the smpatch update as:

# smpatch download -C patchpro.internal.statustags=true -C patchpro.log.level=7 -C patchpro.debug=true -C patchpro.log.file=/tmp/smpatchDebug.log

and watch both the console output, and the /tmp/smpatchDebug.log file for any activity when the smpatch command hangs.

A similar issue has been reported by some other customers and backline escalations for those have been raised to investigate the problem. However the download does resume after approximately twenty minutes for them. If you wish your case analyzed also, please raise a support ticket.

In my case: Im not able to download and apply the patches using SUC. Simple does not work and I have waited hours to see if the download continues or not. It does not.

It is in your interest to open a CR based on my observations since I have no support contract with Sun. Doing so it will ensure SUC will be analyzed by Sun/SUC team and get the proper attention.

Are there any alternatives to SUC ?

Maybe you can re-post in the OpenSolaris community groups.

I did experience these hangs with earlier releases of Solaris 10 (FCS, 1/06) too when applying recent patches.

The reason for these hangs might be that smpatch doesn't properly cope with intermittent unavailability of the Sun patch server, it plainly doesn't recover from these time-outs.
