Required packages for sconadm
Hello,
Could someone please post a list of required packages to register a LPS using sconadm through an http proxy. I am using a 6/06 sparc build based on the "Reduced Network Core" cluster.
I cannot find the info in any documentation and not everybody installs every package on the distribution CD's. So far I have found 13 authentication-type packages and their prerequisites. Doesn't that seem a little ridiculous? Why doesn't sconadm's package have the pre-req packages defined?
Thanks,
Jeff

Hi.It might be quicker to run the installer from the Sun Update Connection 1.0.4 update package here: http://www.sun.com/download/products.xml?id=4457d96dand see where it complains. The patch to turn the client into a Sunn Update proxy is 119788-02 .

OK, this isn't going to work. I already have the latest version of Sun Update connection installed on the server. We are trying to find out what all the OS packages are that are required to register a host for patching.
If I cannot register the host then I cannot retrieve the sconadm patch from Sun, and I'm not sure that installing a patch through smpatch will list required OS packages.
I just think it's a good idea to either document what all the packages are required to register a server or modify the packages to add them as pre-reqs. Most threads on this forum where people are having issues registering a host are asked what packages are installed, it shouldn't have to be that way.

sconadm is part of the SUNWbrg package, which should be on your Solaris install CDs
# 4
The problem is not with finding or installing scondam, the problem is with all the packages that are required to make sconadm or registration in general to work.
There are lot's of pre-reqs such as, you need at least Java 1.5.0_08 in order for it to work in an environment with http proxies, that is not documented anywhere other than this forum.Nowhere is it specified that you need cacaoadm and it's dependent packages installed but there are references after digging in the forums. There is no info about needing the Basic Registration applications but it won't work without them.
So, what are all the OS packages required to successfully register a server?
# 5
Unfortunately, we do not have a list of required packages for Sun Update Connection, however I can tell you that only Solaris 10 hosts with the 'End User Software Group' installed are supported.
This is specified here:
http://docs.sun.com/source/835-0615/Installing.html
and this install type is also used as the baseline for deciding if a host is viable by the Sun Update Connection Support teams.

Thanks for pointing to that info. Based upon this answer I assume this product is only used for patching workstations, not servers. No production server environment would be built with that cluster since it contains a lot of bloat that is only usable for supporting a graphical environment. And if it was, a lot of packages would be stripped out of the cluster to reduce the packages that need security concerns addressed.
Is it correct to assume this product is only for workstations?

End User?
I believe it is the case that most production Solaris server installations do not use the "End User" metacluster due to the fact that it contains entirely too much software that is never used on a server. We use SUNWCrnet, and add a few packages that we need to effectively administer our server, and remove a few (SUNWCnis) that are just wrong for a "reduced net" build.
I also believe that it would appear that Sun does not intend sconadm/smpatch for use on production servers, only desktops, I'd like to be proven incorrect by someone posting a nice list of required packages/clusters (to add to the list that already increases my build by over 100MB) so we can add it to the jumpstart and actually use this on our servers.
I have added the following to my jumpstart image:
# SMPATCH (Patch Pro)
cluster SUNWCbregadd
cluster SUNWCpmgradd
cluster SUNWCswupadd
packageSUNWcacaortadd
packageSUNWjdmk-baseadd
packageSUNWmkcd add
... I am not sure if thats very "minimal" and I got a NPE while running sconadm (from cacao), but it *did* work. Hope this helps! Just added SUNWmkcd to get mkisofs, very important if you expect your machine to boot after installing updates :)
Thanks,
Tommy

CR 6476741 has been created to request a list of which packages are required in order to successfully use Sun UC.
We must highlight this is still work in progress but here is the list we have so far:
SUNWzoner
SUNWj5rt
SUNWj5rtx (64bit)
SUNWpoolr
SUNWpool
SUNWadmc
SUNWadmfr
SUNWadmfw
SUNWlur
SUNWluu
SUNWluzone
SUNWzoneu
SUNWbreg
SUNWccccfg
SUNWccccr
SUNWccccrr
SUNWccfw
SUNWccfwctrl
SUNWccinv
SUNWccsign
SUNWcctpx
SUNWcsr
SUNWcsu
SUNWdc
SUNWppro-plugin-sunos-base
SUNWppror
SUNWpprou
SUNWxcu4
SUNWctpls
SUNWmfrun
SUNWxwrtl
SUNWxwice
SUNWxwfnt
SUNWxwplr
SUNWxwplt
SUNWsensorr
SUNWscnsomr
The SUNWxw packages wouldn't be required if not using the GUI.
# 9
The latter two packages (SUNWsensorr and SUNWscnsomr) were introduced with the 6/06 update. How can we get them without downloading the whole update?
# 10
Wow, that's quite a list.I noticed that SUNWbreg was specified, even though that package no longer exists in 06/06. What is the name of the package that took it's place?
# 11
Hi.
The SUNWbreg package was superceeded by the SUNWbrg and SUNWbrgr packages.
You may also need SUNWcacao and SUNWcacaort .
As mentioned above, the list given is untested, and may be incorrect. We are waiting for the outcome of the change request before we can give a definite list for any release of Solaris 10.
# 12
Thanks. I also see SUNWdc is included but is not in the 06/06 release. What superceded that package?
# 13
I believe that this was replaced by the cacao packages.

I am a long-time avid Sun evangelist, but I have to say, this issue with the patches have given me the greatest headache I have ever had from Sun.
I really wish you would go back to allowing us to download at least the minimum recommended clusters until you figure this whole patch management thing out. (ie: 10_Recommended.zip). It was a VERY easy way for us System Administrators to keep all of our systems on the same rev level and on our own schedule.
Anyways, the lists here seem to be correct except for ONE missing package, at least on the 06/06 release of Solaris 10.
I was still hanging running the 'sconadm register -a -r /tmp/reg' until I added the package 'SUNWjdmk-base'
After installing that package along with the others listed above I was able to get my 'SUNWCreq' cluster to install and register using sconadm. I do have other packages installing, so I cannot guarantee that there is not other dependancies.
Here is a full list of additional packages I'm installing as part of my Jet build (SUNWCreq+):
base_config_profile_add_packages="SUNWtoo SUNWxwplr SUNWxwfnt SUNWxwplt SUNWxwic
e SUNWxwrtl SUNWmfrun SUNWj3rt SUNWj5rt SUNWj5rtx SUNWppror SUNWpprou SUNWxcu4 SUNWppro-plugin-sunos-base SUNWccccfg SUNWccccr SUNWccccrr SUNWccsign SUNWcctpx SUNWgm4 SUNWgmake SUNWbindr SUNWbind SUNWctpls SUNWscpu SUNWgtar SUNWsshcu SUNWsshdr SUNWsshdu SUNWsshr SUNWsshu SUNWdoc SUNWman SUNWbash SUNWmysqlr SUNWmysqlu SUNWntpr SUNWntpu SUNWwgetr SUNWgcmn SUNWwgetu SUNWtcpd SUNWbinutils SUNWscpr SUNWpl5u SUNWhea SUNWapchr SUNWapchu SUNWapchd SUNWaclg SUNWopensslr SUNWopenssl-commands SUNWopenssl-include SUNWopenssl-man SUNWsensor SUNWsensorr SUNWscnsomr SUNWscnsom SUNWsamr SUNWsam SUNWscn-base-r SUNWscn-base SUNWcacaort SUNWscnprmr SUNWscnprm SUNWccfw SUNWccfwctrl SUNWccinv SUNWcsmauth SUNWbrg SUNWlur SUNWadmfr SUNWadmfw SUNWadmc SUNWluu SUNWpoolr SUNWpool SUNWluzone SUNWzoner SUNWzoneu SUNWipfh SUNWj3dev SUNWjato SUNWjhrt SUNWjhdev SUNWmctag SUNWtcatu SUNWmconr SUNWmcon SUNWmcosx SUNWmcos SUNWpsvrr SUNWpsvru SUNWjdmk-base"
I hope this helps!
Sun, just remember, most of your boxes are "Servers" and any Sys. Admin worth his weight, will not install a User cluster on their server and there are plenty of us small/medium size business that aren't ready to move up to a full N1 implementation and only manage < 20 servers.

Same here. In fact I was so annoyed by the big waste
of time that I created and published a patch tool myself.
So if you can't use Sun's Update Manager because of
its requirements or just want something much more light-
weight, give PCA a try:
http://www.par.univie.ac.at/solaris/pca/
I usually hesitate to announce it here in Sun's forum
about their tool, but if it helps to keep people stick to
Solaris I guess that's a win-win.

Correct. That's why PCA only requires perl and wget.
With these in place, it'll happily run, download and install
patches on even the smallest package cluster install.
