PM2.0, Solaris 9, Proxy Patch Server, Patch CD

Hi

We understand Patch Manager is going through some changes at the moment but we urgently need an automated pacthing solution that works with solaris 9.

For security reasons, our servers have no connection to the internet so we will need a proxy patch server. Also, because this server will not be able to download the patches from Sun we will need to get our patches supplied by cdrom. So our questions are;-

(1) Does Sun patch manager work for Solaris 9 systems? (It did, but does it still?)

(2) Can we populate the proxy patch servers with a recommended cluster or are the patches special in some way? (I'm guessing not)

(3) If we do need a "special" bundle of patches to populate the proxy patch server can we get them on cdrom and how do we subscribe to getting hold of this cdrom? (drawn a blank everywhere with this so far!)

(4) How do we get hold of the proxy patch server software? We have look extensively but have yet to find a link to it. (can only find links to the non-proxy software!)

Note, we are a Sun Platinum customer and we logged a call with these questions 2 weeks ago but haven抰 yet received the answers!

Many thanks

Andy

Hi Andy,

You are correct that the patching tools for Solaris 8 & 9 are going through some change at the minute. Currently PM2.0 is the recommended patch tool for Solaris 9 but Sun are going to change this in the very near future so that is uses Sun Update Connection.

All customers who use PM2.0 will be offered a patch that will update PM2.0 to SunUC. If customers do not install this patch then no patching solution will be offered.

To answer your questions:

1:) Yes, will be updated to SunUC in the future

2:) No

3:) There is cdrom's available but i am not sure if they can be sent to customers on a monthly basis.

4:) Have a look at the link below:

http://www.sun.com/service/sunupdate/

As you logged a call 2 weeks ago, can you provide the reference number and i will check to make sure the correct team have picked it up and worked it.

Regards,

Scott W

Hi Scott

thanks for your reply

our case is 37663137

The link you gave provides information only ... we still need to find an actual link to download the proxy software.

I guess this software is widely used, can anyone else point us in the right direction?

Many thanks

Andy

The Local Patch Server is part of the Sun Control Station bundle. This is available here: http://www.sun.com/download/products.xml?id=41f12d92

Thanks for the link.

According to the PM2.0 admin guide (pg 25 June 2005) we can tell the LPS to get its patches locally or from a CD;-

# patchsvr setup -p file:/export/patches

OR

# patchsvr setup -p file:cdrom/cdrom0

Our LPS cannot connect to the internet (no physical connection) and only Windows stanadlones have brower access to the internet. So is it possible for us to download a PM2.0 patch "bundle" ona Windows box, write it to CDROM and copy the pacthes from CDROM to say /export/patches on our LPS?

Many thanks

Hi thanks for all your support so far.

I've got the LPS installed and all the clients ponting to it, but I'm still a little unsure how I populate the LPS with patches.

I some how need a patch bundle for the clients to interrogate. Can you recomend a method of getting hold of such a bundle when the LPS has no internet connection?

Many thanks

Solaris 10 is a free download and runs on common desktop hardware. You could install Sol10 on a desktop with a CD burner and an internet connection and take it from there.

BTW, I found your Radiance case in the wrong queue. Please call your CCC and have it re-routed to:

Product Field: Sun Update Connection 1.0 - System Edition

Group: SWUP_SUPPORT

Also quote OTRS case: 11120771

Hi

Thanks again for your advice .... I've got some ultra 60's connected to a DVD burner at home and will go along your lines burning a DVD .. thanks.

But I'm still a bit confused what I need to copy across to the LPS, is it a database of the latest patches, which generates an appropriate patch list for clients or do I somehow copy across a bundle of patches to a directory that all the clients point to and interrogate?

If the latter is true, can I just populate the LPS with the latest recomended bundle?

Many thanks

Andy

Hi again,I believe you can just add a collection of patches to a directory, and specify that directory as the patch source for the LPS.The documentation for LPS is here: http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-1128
