Java CAPS General Availability

I have some questions regarding what Sun calls Java CAPS "No Cost Download", hope someone can help me clarify them:

1. Which are the license restrictions for the use of the downloaded software? May I use it in production environments?

2. When is Sun planning to release the software for download?

3. Is there any online or computer based training available?

Best Regards,

Luis Bender

eingfoan is correct.

You may use the no cost download however you like but will be doing so without support, patches, indemnification, etc. If you want all that, you will need to purchase a license and support contract.

We will be releasing the no cost download within the next 1-2 months and stay tuned for other free and for fee support and training offerings we plan to make available.

Has anyone on this board negotiated a contract with Sun for the CAPS product? If so, what was your experience?

Hi ktschmidt, could you please clarify if the availability also includes running JCAPS in a production environment. Is there a licensing document somewhere that can be viewed? Has Sun stated that publicly somewhere?Regards, Sebastian.

When we make the downloadable version available, we do not plan on imposing a restriction that the software can't be used for production. However, as others have noted you would be doing so without support, indemnification, access to patches, etc.

Jonathan Schwartz has certainly discussed free software in his blog at http://blogs.sun.com/jonathan and there was a discussion of this in the original press release at http://www.sun.com/smi/Press/sunflash/2005-11/sunflash.20051130.1.xml

hi *,

all i really have to say about using it "free" is.

from my point of view you will need support unless at least one point of the ones below match to your situation.

1) the version does not need any patching -> unlikely as software always needs to be updated somewhen

2) you are very experienced in the software

3) your mission is not critical (unlikely for most EAI like tasks)

4) you have lots of time to solve issues that are raised in a complex software sturcture

5) the open community is full of "lots of" experts that are willing to share their experiences

i know using it for free is attractive but you always have to consider what free means for a product that is "really" mission critical

Hi Kevin,

I can understand that without a contract you cannot obtain Sun official support, although I expect Sun fellows to take active part in this forum.

But I can't understand why limit the access to patches. If you allow people to download and use the software (actually, you promote that), why not allow them to download and install patches that will keep the software running?

hi *,

any idea how is this solved in e.g. solaris issues regarding patches?

/edit

what i would like to know what if:

i am a customer of sun paying for e.g. Integrator what would be if i am using eInsight additionally without having licenced it to the company? what would this mean for support / payments? is this an allowed model?

regards chris
