Ultra 40 and SAS..question answered

My Sun rep was able to get hold of the right people engineers at Sun to find out if I could add Serial Attached SCSI drives to an Ultra 40, use an LSI 8408E controller and STILL use the backplane. The answer is yes! The connectors are SAS/SATA compatible. All that has to be done is make sure you get the right cable to connect the controller to the backplane and Sun was helpful enough to provide a source for that.

The high end Ultra 40 is on the way along with an LSI 8408E controller, four Maxtor Atlas II 15K SAS drives and the appropriate cable. We expect to obliterate the already impressive benchmarks that the Ultra 40 has set.

It should all be assembled and loaded the week after next.

This is really good feedback for the forum, perhaps a bit more detail would be good as well, the most impostant detail is the cables... please pots the source.

The cable needed can be found at:

http://www.cs-electronics.com/sas-cables.htm

Sun pointed me at this site and gave me the following information. The Folks at CS Electronics confirmed it with LSI and I'm awaiting delivery. The cable is $29.00 but they have $35.00 minimum.

Internal MultiLane to (4) 7-Pin Signal Plugs

3Gb/s

Order #

SAS-8482-X/.5m Cross-Over

How does that let you connect to the backplane when the blackplane and lsi card use 8484 connectors? The cable you ordered only uses 8484 connectors on side and regular sas/sata connectors on the other side. Are you connecting directly to the sas/sata drive connectors and not using the backplane at all? I tried connecting to a sas controller to the backplane with different cables and have no luck seeing the drives. Did this work for you?
