3D Application Support for SunRay
Hi,
We are considering taking advantage of SunRay technology in our organisation (Engineering Construction) for its ability to hot desk, increased reliability, lower total cost of ownership and a host of other reasons.
The one limitation I have found with the SunRay is its inability to display 3D accelerated graphics for CAD applications.
Our use for 3D graphics is only occasional, to work out simple problems like pipe stab in's, 2D profiles of 3D objects, or view files from clients and suppliers. We don't require very intensive 3D capabilities, low end PC's suffice.
No modifications are required for the SunRay client to support 3D, instead the SunRay Server Virtual Frame Buffer could be modified to support 3D accelerated graphics using EGL with 3D OpenGL Hardware rendering performed by the Server.
3D support on the SunRay would free our organisation from PC's and their expensive total cost of ownership.
Sun would also need to support mulitple XVR-2500 frame buffers on their application servers, the last Visualisation server sold by Sun was the V880z.
