SMC to monitor network devices

Hi managers,

We are working with SMC to monitor sun machines and everything works quite fine. The problem comes whentrying to monitorize our network devices (I've been googling but nothing was found). I have tried with a cisco switch (catalyst 2900) with it's own snmp agent activated. Also I've seen a cisco .mib in /opt/SUNWsymon/util/cfg. Can you help me with this issue? Maybe I still need to move a copy of brand new cisco mibs to the SMC?

Thanks in advance, and regards,

Francisco Rivas

For Cisco routers (and many of their switches) there's an off-the-shelf module you can download:

Hi Mikel,

Thank for your promt reply. This module is for sure going to cover our needs, and we will try it. Nevertheless, the point I'd like to know is how to make it run "manually". I have downloaded cisco MIB's in *my format. As far as I know, now I'd have to compile them with SMC, but in this case I think they dont have a tool to do such. Therefore, I think I need a tool to compile those files (for SMC) to have the mibs for our cisco switches. Moreover, I still dont know if SMC will be able to work with those files... I'm a bit confused.

Briefing: Although I will try and probably use HalcyonInc module for cisco, I need to know how this process would be (always talking about SMC) in a "manual" way.

EDIT: I have checked your solution and works pretty fine, so I've just send a pricing mail to info@halcyoninc.com. Let me ask you something more: I can monitor a switch IN the remote systems section of a host, but I'd like to create a new object only for that switch, so I don't receive alarms for that host but for that unique switch. How can I achieve that?

Best Regards,

Francisco

A module always has to exist within an Agent (it needs someplace to run from), but the icon itself can stand alone in your topology. Try this:

1) Find your Cisco Router module in Remote Systems, and right-click the label of the module in the left-hand hierarchy. You should have an option to Copy it.

2) Click back into the main SunMC window you get when you login (probably "Default Domain"). Right click anywhere in it's left-hand hierarch and choose Paste or Paste Into.

You should end up with an icon for that router/switch all by itself. You can now also right-click and Rename Object too if you wish. This way you see the status of just that device, instead of relying on it's status to bubble up through the Agent (where it may show other Agent-related alarms).

You can cut/copy and paste almost anything in SunMC. This lets you do things like make a Domain specific to your area of interest (i.e. all network devices)... or make a Domain per-service.... where you copy in modules for app/directory/web/portal/directory/SAN/networkring modules from as many seperate Agents as you want to make a composite view of a specific app stack (instead of a collection of Agents that may show alarms from modules you don't care about).

If that makes sense. I think I confused myself :)

P.S. If you're trying the Cisco module, don't forget to set up some PRM for it as well (

Tools -> Report Manager). You can automate some very nice graphs and reports showing traffic though each interface.
