problem starting smc

Hello I am a total solaris newbie....all sympathy appreciated.

I have a sun fire V120 running solaris 8, connecting through an xterm on Windows 200

I am trying to set up slices/partitions on my new disk, I am very unsure of running format commands etc. So I want to try to do it through the SMC.

When I log in as root and type smc at the prompt it looks like its going to start and I get a black box on my screen with a little clock, then it just dissapears and I go back to my prompt.

When I enter the commands /etc/init.d/init.wbem status

I get back SMC server not running on port 898

When I enter /etc/init.d/init.wbem start

I get back bind: Address already in use

When I enter /etc/init.d/init.wbem stop

I get back SMC server not running on port 898

Any ideas?

All help greatly appreciated

Thanks

I have recieved that message as well attempting to run SMC on a node that is getting its ip address from a DHCP server. I am using a Sparc 5 running sun 2.8. It is DHCP only to use my ISP (earthlink) connection shared with other machines (windows) at home. Earthlink does not support a UNIX box for connection to its web site. So a NETGEAR router was added to make the connection to earthlink and send private ip addresses to the hosts connected to the router. In trying to get SMC up and running i get that very message. In addition SMC if it does come up is looking for a Remote Host to load its toolbox from. Even though the machine is running as a stand alone host getting its address in a DHCP fashion. As part of my home lab/learning center I would like to have SMC to run without trying to load from a remote host. How do i accomplish this?

Thanks
